Famed professional sailor Francis Joyon, standing on the keel of his upturned boat IDEC, in which he was trying to break a record for being the fastest across the Atlantic, refused to abandon ship. Instead he spent an incredible 36 hours in its tiny cabin bobbing up and down in the rough waters off Long Island until a tow arrived. More here at Sail World.
French sailor Francis Joyon crossed the starting line today en route for a record-breaking attempt of the Atlantic crossing from New York to the western tip of Cornwall. Joyon needs to make the trip in less than 5 days, 19 hours, 30 minutes and 40 seconds made three years ago by Thomas Coville aboard Sodebo over the same distance estimated to be 2980 nautical miles.
Francis Joyon’s attempt of the record for crossing the North Atlantic suddenly turned into a nightmare yesterday afternoon when sailing to the mouth of the Hudson River to reach the starting line and the mark of Ambrose, the big trimaran IDEC was caught in severe thunderstorms and torrential rains.
Blinded by the downpour and somewhat taken aback by this unexpected weather scenario, Francis Joyon, by tacking into the channel of the Hudson, his a channel buoy that slipped between his central hull and port float, causing damage to fairings linking arms front and rear of the giant multihull. The impossible weather situation compounded the damage. Francis had to turn around and return. We wonder how IDEc feels about Joyon not making it out of the Hudson.
