VULCAIN TROPHY – The nine D35 multihulls are getting ready for the second part of the Vulcain Trophy season with 3 regattas to be held in September and October. The first one will take place in Versoix near Geneva on 8 and 9 September. The die is still not cast, although Realstone Sailing has a comfortable lead over his rivals Alinghi and De Rham-Sotheby’s.

The sailors participating in the D35 circuit, the Vulcain Trophy presented by Business & Decision, are getting ready for the second half of the season. A short reminder: 8 races are run during the championship, of which 5 have already been completed. The regattas are specific courses dedicated to D35 catamarans, except for the “great classics” of the lake, the Genève-Rolle-Genève and the Bol d’Or Mirabaud, long-distance regattas hosting various classes of boats, but counting for the D35 circuit. The fifth and final step of the first part of the season was the Bol d’Or Mirabaud, won by Realstone Sailing. Now the teams are starting to get ready for the second part of the season starting on 8 and 9 September with the Open de Versoix II.

Overview of the provisional overall ranking - The overall ranking shows the striking predominance ofRealstone Sailing, the team composed of members of the Regatta Training Centre of Geneva and skippered byJérôme Clerc, who won all the regattas except for the first one, finishing equal on points with Alinghi lead byErnesto Bertarelli.

The Vulcain Trophy reaches out to this young team with a lead of 8 points in the overall standings on his pursuers, Alinghi and de Rham-Sotheby’s skippered byPhilippe Cardis who are equal on points. Will they keep going with the same panache as for the first part of the season? The ranking remains very tight for the other competitors, since Ladycat lead by Dona Bertarelli follows Cardis with a difference of one point only. Artemis Racing lead by Torbjorn Tornqvist, 5th with 16 pts, mu! st pull out all the stops to move to the top. No doubt the team will go for it with Paul Cayard on board. Zen Too lead by Guy de Picciotto showed many facets of their talent, but had some difficult times with a capsize and a brutal stop in the rocky bay of Crans. If no further incidents stop their momentum, the boat helmed by Fred Le Peutrec could be a real challenger for the competitors. Veltigroup of Marco Simeoni,Okalys Corum of Nicolas Grange and Nickel lead byFred Moura are not far behind. For them too regularity and some good races could bring some changes to the overall standings.
