RED BULL YOUTH AMERICAS CUP TRIALS

YOUTH SAILING  - Five America’s Cup World Series Teams support own youth teams

The line-up for the Selection Series for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup will include 11 national teams, attending the two qualifying sessions in San Francisco from February 9-24.

A British team, the GBR Youth Challenge, has been added to the roster to take the place of the previously invited French Youth Team, who now qualify directly for September’s event after gaining support from the French America’s Cup World Series entry, Energy Team.

“The America’s Cup is the greatest thing you can do in sailing,” said Adam Lees, of the British team. “The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is about getting more people involved in the competition and making it more accessible to young sailors so the next generation is involved early on.”

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, scheduled September 1-4, 2013, begins with the Selection Series in San Francisco in February. With the goal of ensuring the best of the best are on the starting line of the main event, the Selection Series will narrow the field through two rigorous training workshop and regatta sessions from February 9-15 and February 18-24, 2013.

“The goal of the selection process is two-fold,” said Hans-Peter Steinacher, a double Olympic gold medalist who shares the role of Sports Director for the event with Roman Hagara.

“First, we want all of the teams at the selection series to learn and improve and maximize their potential. At the same time, we must evaluate the crews over the course of the week so that we can invite the top teams to race for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in September. This is such a great chance for these young teams to launch their careers.”

“We will have this one chance to see the youth teams train and compete under high-pressure situations during the selection camp,” agreed Hagara. “It’s a fantastic way to assess who can perform to their best and to select those who deserve to qualify for the main event.”

Emirates Team New Zealand, Artemis Racing, China Team and Energy Team have all indicated they are supporting teams for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Youth crews with the support of an America’s Cup World Series team are eligible for direct entry to September’s event via the Regatta Director.

ORACLE TEAM USA, the current holder of the America’s Cup, conducted its own training camp before Christmas to select which American teams it would support. USA45 Racing (representing the USA), and American Youth Sailing Force (representing San Francisco) will both spend the coming months training for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup under the stewardship of the American Cup defender.

The Selection Series in February will be held on the same AC45 wing sail catamarans the youth crews will race in September. These are also the same boats the America’s Cup teams race in the AC World Series.

ENERGY GETS LOOSE

AMERICAS CUP – Local sailor Todd  Tholke is either a Good Samaritan or a high-seas pirate.

On Sept. 30, Tholke was a hero when he went out on the bay in the middle of  the night to single-handedly rescue the runaway French catamaran Energy. The  America’s Cup  World Series boat snapped its mooring line at Piers 30-32 that night and  drifted off into the darkness, unmanned and out of control. It fetched up on the  rocks of Treasure Island, where it was spotted from the land by Tholke.

At 3:30 a.m., Tholke pulled it off the shore with his 14-foot Boston Whaler.  He then towed it to the Treasure Isle Marina and handed it back to the  racing team.

The French were so grateful they offered to give Tholke a ride on  the bay.

But Friday, as the French prepared for the regatta, Tholke’s representatives  presented them with a warrant from U.S. District Court to “arrest” the boat and  take it into custody as soon as Sunday’s races were over.

Based on a law from the 1800s, Tholke’s attorney John  Edgcomb said in court documents, the rescue had established “a valid  maritime salvage claim” and Tholke was entitled to “a liberal maritime salvage  award.” Edgcomb said the amount was up to the court, but something “in excess of  $200,000.”

The French officially said in a statement that they were “surprised and  disappointed,” but it would be more accurate to say they  were flabbergasted.

It is hard to blame them. After all, the boat only floated a mile. It was  only free for a few hours. And to be honest, if Tholke had just made a phone  call, they would rather have picked it up themselves.

It is tempting to speculate that Tholke figured his ship had literally come  in. He quietly nabbed the boat, claimed the Coast  Guard declined to pull it off the rocks, and went straight to  legal counsel.

Ridiculous, says Edgcomb, who said Tholke would not be available  for comment.

“Todd wasn’t doing this for the money,” he said. “He thought he was doing  something heroic that people would appreciate.” MORE STORY

AMERICAS CUP – Energy Team will not be joining the list of challengers competing for the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup.

The French team led by the Peyron brothers had been working hard to secure its Cup campaign, but with the challenge deadline of midnight on August 1st looming, the team has advised it will focus on the AC World Series and building a challenge for the 35th America’s Cup.

“We will shift to ‘Plan B’,” said Bruno Peyron. “We will compete in the AC World Series and prepare for the next America’s Cup, the 35th edition, in the best possible way.
“We feel a responsibility to build on all the work we have done so far and to provide a platform for long-term success for our team and our partners. We want to be playing to win and in this instance we have run out of time for 2013.”

Energy Team has found success on the AC World Series, winning the fleet racing in Venice with skipper Loick Peyron and knocking off the top teams in both match racing and fleet racing formats over the course of the first season.

The team will compete on the 2012-13 AC World Series circuit beginning with the next event in San Francisco from August 21-26.

The team is also preparing to field an entry in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.
