LUNA ROSSA SWORDFISH WINS

AMERICAS CUP WORLD SERIES – Led by helmsman Francesco Bruni, Luna Rossa Swordfish today won the overall championship of the America’s Cup World Series Naples.

Bruni posted a thrilling win in the fleet racing finale, coming from behind on the final run in a race that saw the lead change hands three times.

The win was cathartic for the emotional Italian helmsman. Earlier in the day Luna Rossa Swordfish lost the match racing championship to ORACLE TEAM USA SLINGSBY. Bruni was critical of his performance in the loss after leading the match early on.

“This win was the only way to forget our mistake in the match racing,” said Bruni, who will be the tactician aboard Luna Rossa Challenge’s AC72 in the upcoming Louis Vuitton Cup, America’s Cup Challenger Series (July 4-Aug. 30).

“The fleet race win really means a lot to me. We had an opportunity for the double win, but just missed out. I can’t thank my crew enough, Paul Campbell-James, Max Sirena, Xabi Fernandez and Manuel Modena. They did a great job today.”

Slingsby delivered on his stated goal: to secure the overall 2012-2013 America’s Cup World Series season championship for ORACLE TEAM USA, the defense team in the upcoming 34th America’s Cup (Sept. 7-21). He wrapped up that championship yesterday and today added the match racing title as well.

“I’m really proud to be getting the America’s Cup World Series trophy for ORACLE TEAM USA,” said Slingsby. ORACLE TEAM USA also won last year’s championship. “Jimmy Spithill and his team set it up for us. We just had to come here, do our best and luckily he gave us enough of a lead to take home the trophy.”

The second America’s Cup World Series Naples surpassed last year’s event in terms of spectators. Local event officials estimate that more than 1 million people have turned out along the Naples waterfront and in the Race Village to enjoy the week-long event.

The crowds began coming out in force last Sunday with some 100,000 people estimated to have lined the shores of the Bay of Naples for the informal coastal race. The fans kept returning, lured by close racing yards from the shoreline and nightly entertainment at the Race Village.

Slingsby won the match racing championship by overtaking Bruni on the second upwind leg. After trailing by 22 seconds at the leeward gate, Slingsby showed the moves that have earned him the nickname “the wind whisperer” due to his ability to sniff out wind shifts and puffs.

“It was so shifty that I honestly thought we had a good chance,” said Slingsby. “I knew if we could get them out of phase on the shifts and we were in phase, huge gains could be made. We said we could catch them and I’m so glad that we did.”

Slingsby passed Bruni when the Italian failed to cover. Until that moment, Bruni had sailed a brilliant match. He showed great patience in the pre-start, stuffing Slingsby and holding him off the course.

“We did everything perfectly until that moment,” said Bruni. “We made a couple of big mistakes on the last upwind leg. The wind was shifting a lot and we had a couple of bad tacks where boat completely stopped.”

Second place in the America’s Cup World Series season championship went to Chris Draper and Luna Rossa Piranha. The defending champions at America’s Cup World Series Naples placed fourth overall this year.

“I think we were going so well just before event, we probably got a little bit expectant and ahead of ourselves,” said Draper, the helmsman of Luna Rossa’s AC72. “But we’re pleased to place second overall in the series. There are a lot of good teams out here.”

America’s Cup World Series Naples wraps up the 2012-13 America’s Cup World Series season. The focus now shifts to the “Summer of Racing” planned for San Francisco. It begins in July with the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America’s Cup Challenger Series, and concludes in September with the America’s Cup Finals.

ORACLE FOUND GUILTY OF SPYING ON LUNA ROSSA

AMERICAS CUP – (Story by Duncan Johnstone) America’s Cup holders Oracle have been found guilty of attempted spying on Italy’s Luna Rossa catamaran in Auckland.

The International Jury ruled in favour of the Italians in a decision released yesterday.

No penalty has been announced as yet.

Luna Rossa had protested that an Oracle chase boat had come within the 200m boundary enforced by Cup rules to take photos of their AC72.

Oracle team members have regularly been out on the Waitemata Harbour while Luna Rossa and Team New Zealand have been going through their 30 days of testing the giant new cats.

Oracle’s defence was based on a technicality that to be “navigating” within the 200m zone, they had to be moving. Oracle argued their boat was stationary.

The jury decided otherwise and ruled that the taking of photographs during the incident was “an attempt to gain information about another competitor” and that there was no prior consent by Luna Rossa.

The jury has invited parties to make submissions on the appropriate penalty, if any.

It has also instructed Oracle to hand over to Luna Rossa and the jury all photographic material taken while the Oracle vessel was within 200 metres.

Meanwhile, Oracle’s new wingsail is on its way to San Francisco from New Zealand where it has been built.

Oracle demolished their original sail in their dramatic capsize in the San Francisco Bay in October.

The new sail has been constructed at Core Builders Composites facility in Warkworth.

Oracle plan to mount the new sail on their repaired USA-17 and be back sailing in California in February.

Team New Zealand completed their 30 days of testing last week and are now continuing development in their 33-foot catamarans while their second AC72 is finished, due for launching in early February.

Luna Rossa are still working through their 30-day testing programme.

ORACLE 17 HAS A BAD DAY

TEAM ORACLE – The defender of the 34th America’s Cup, has capsized its giant AC72 catamaran on San Francisco Bay during a training session. No one on the crew was injured.

The capsize took place during the team’s eighth day on the water. Conditions were fresh, with building winds whipping up waves against one of the strongest ebb currents of the year. As the team turned the boat downwind, the front of the boat nosedived and the boat pitch-poled. CLICK ON ‘FULL SCREEN VIEW’ TO SEE THE BOAT ON FOILS THEN BEAR AWAY INTO A PITCHPOLE.

“When the nose went down, the wing hit and a few guys went in the water,” said tactician Tom Slingsby. “We were unsure if the wing would snap, so we all climbed off the boat.”

With the boat on its side, the sea conditions quickly inflicted damage on the wing. The boat was pulled out to sea by the strong current, and as darkness fell, the team was still working to secure the catamaran platform and bring it back to base. The wing is destroyed.

“There’s no question this is a setback. This will be a big test for our team,” said skipper Jimmy Spithill. “But I’ve seen these guys in a similar situation in the past campaign before we won the America’s Cup. A strong team will bounce back from it. This won’t stop us from winning the America’s Cup.”

Each team competing in the 34th America’s Cup and Louis Vuitton Cup (the America’s Cup Challenger Series) can build two AC72 boats. This was the first of two boats to be built and launched by ORACLE TEAM USA. The second is due to be launched early in the new year.

Event organizers say the setback to the American team won’t impact the 2013 racing calendar.

“This is a challenge for ORACLE TEAM USA,” said Stephen Barclay, the CEO of the 34th America’s Cup. “The team will assess how to fix the damage caused by the capsize to this boat and will adjust its program as necessary. We expect them to be ready to defend the Cup as planned.”

ORACLE TEAM USA – 17 Capsizes During Training in San Francisco – the team’s AC72 racing yacht – capsized during training at approximately 3 pm PT today on San Francisco Bay. All crew and ORACLE TEAM USA team members are safe. It was the boat’s eighth day on the water since the launch in August. Said tactician Tom Slingsby of the capsize: “We called for a bear-away as we were out training. The winds were blowing about 25 knots, and there was strong ebb current at the time. We started the bear-away, and as the boat accelerated it pitch-poled. …

“We didn’t know what was going to happen with the new boat. When the nose went down, the wing hit and a few guys went in the water. We were unsure if the wing would snap, so we all climbed off the boat. “Luckily, everyone is accounted for and no one was hurt. The wing is pretty badly damaged, and we are working to get the boat back in position to return to Pier 80.” The crew and boat will return to the team base at Pier 80 in San Francisco and assess the situation further. SPITHILL WINS MATCH RACE

AMERICAS CUP – ORACLE TEAM USA SPITHILL showed the resiliency today at America’s Cup World Series San Francisco that is the mark of a great team.

The veteran crew, led by skipper Jimmy Spithill, overcame a spectacular capsize in Fleet Race 5 and later won the Match Racing Championship of the event sailed on San Francisco Bay. The U.S. Coast Guard estimated the spectator fleet at 1,000 vessels, while tens of thousands of people lined the shore.

ORACLE TEAM USA SPITHILL beat Emirates Team New Zealand (Dean Barker) by 18 seconds in a race that was decided on the start line. With less than 10 seconds to the start, Spithill dove to leeward of Barker and luffed his New Zealand opponent so hard that Barker wound up tacking to port to avoid a penalty. Spithill sped onto the racecourse as Barker was circling around to start and led by 31 seconds at the first reach mark.

“There was a lot of time to go to the start and he was way too early. It was a matter of biding our time,” said Spithill, who is the youngest skipper to ever have won the America’s Cup. “Our coach, Philippe Presti, has done a lot of work with Ben (Ainslie), Russ (Coutts) and I, and we’ve really been out-starting the other teams in the match racing. Full credit to Philippe, he’s the one who got us to this level.”

“With about 10 seconds to go we didn’t do a good job protecting our position, and that was it,” said Barker. “There’s always an opportunity to get back into it in this style of racing and the guys ground away at it, but we ran out of runway to do anything.”

The result was impressive considering that one hour earlier ORACLE TEAM USA SPITHILL lay on its port side. During the first fleet race of the day, the fifth in the series, Spithill was in second at the first reach mark and turning downwind in a mighty puff of approximately 20 knots. Spithill’s bows dug in, the boat stood nearly vertical and then rolled onto its port side with the wingsail hitting the water.

None of the crew was injured in the incident, which forced them out of the race. They rebounded to place second in the day’s second fleet race.

“It was a bit of an eventful day for us, with the swim in the first race,” said Spithill. “I was really proud of the lads and our shore crew, our support team. They righted the boat and we got back into second race and got a second place. I’m very impressed with the team.”

Spithill advanced to the championship after beating Artemis Racing – White (Terry Hutchinson) in the semifinals, while Emirates Team New Zealand beat Artemis Racing – Red (Nathan Outteridge).
In the fleet racing championship, J.P. Morgan BAR (Ben Ainslie) continued its strong showing with a 4-1. Ainslie has the high score of 63 points followed by Artemis Racing – White with 52 points, Emirates Team New Zealand with 47 points and ORACLE TEAM USA SPITHILL with 39 points, in a tie with Artemis Racing – Red.

AMERICAS CUP – The San Francisco Giants and ORACLE TEAM USA brought home two of the most iconic trophies in world sport in 2010 – Major League Baseball’s World Series and sailboat racing’s America’s Cup. On Aug. 25 they’ll join forces and celebrate their success with their fans while looking forward to repeating this success in 2013.

“America’s Cup Day” at AT&T Park will see a full day of activities built around the Giants’ third of four home games against the Atlanta Braves.

Highlights of the day will include:

  • ORACLE TEAM USA’s wingsail AC45 catamarans moored in McCovey Cove
  • First pitch by ORACLE TEAM USA’s Jimmy Spithill, the youngest winning skipper in the 161 years of America’s Cup history, winner of the 33rd America’s Cup.
  • Giants’ owner Larry Baer and skipper Bruce Bochy presenting to the sailors on the field
  • America’s Cup trophy on display at Triples’ Alley, Pitcher’s Mound & Community Clubhouse
  • Pre-Game sail past by the America’s Cup World Series teams’ AC45 race boats from the U.S., Europe, Australasia and Asia

San Francisco is the host city for the 2013 America’s Cup, and the city’s home teams will focus attention on this summer’s and next summer’s racing action on the Bay.

The day coincides with the penultimate day of competition at the ACWS San Francisco, taking place Aug. 21-26, featuring racing right off the city front between Marina Green and Piers 27/29.

The Giants’ legendary skipper Bochy has already trained with ORACLE TEAM USA’s CEO Russell Coutts, the most successful skipper in America’s Cup history. “Awesome,” was Bochy’s reaction after experiencing the athletic crew work on a high-speed, next-generation AC45 race boat. “The crew would make great infielders.”

“The Giants are giants in this city and recognizable throughout the U.S.,” said Spithill. “This is a fantastic opportunity to tell the fans that our two teams are totally focused on winning the World Series and the America’s Cup again next year.”

Spithill Visits Youths at Governor’s Cup

ORACLE TEAM –  USA skipper Jimmy Spithill visited last weekend with the international crews competing at the 46th Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship for sailors under the age of 21 hosted by the Balboa Yacht Club (Corona del Mar, Calif.).

Spithill, who represented Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at the Governor’s Cup in 1994 and 1996, spoke at the skippers’ meeting on Saturday morning and afterwards visited with members of each team on the dock.

“It was great to see the next generation of match racers at the Governor’s Cup. The Governor’s Cup was my first match racing event and I did the bow, which is probably why we came 2nd!” said Spithill.

Fourteen years after his second appearance at the Governor’s Cup, Spithill in 2010 became the youngest skipper to ever win the America’s Cup, at age 30.

“I really take my hat off to Balboa Yacht Club for keeping it running for 46 years and providing youth sailors the opportunity to bigger things. It’s highly likely some of these teams will be racing in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup next year.”

The venerable America’s Cup trophy also made an appearance at the Governor’s Cup accompanied by Tom Ehman, Vice Commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club, who presented video of the AC45’s ripping around racecourses to great cheers from the youth sailors.

Coutts: Maybe the AC72 is too big?

AMERICAS CUP – Story by Suzanne McFadden- Boating NZ

Now that the America’s Cup has finally got the green flag from the city of San Francisco, a buoyant Russell Coutts has turned his focus to the water.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors have unanimously approved a much scaled-back America’s Cup plan put up by event officials for the 2013 regatta; Cup defenders Oracle Racing describing the decision as “a long-awaited outcome after months of arduous negotiation”.

Coutts, Oracle’s CEO, put it more bluntly on his Facebook page: “Good news yesterday that the politicians in San Francisco finally stopped negotiating against themselves and approved the deal with America’s Cup! Maybe we can now focus on the racing???”

Under the newly-approved agreement, America’s Cup teams will be based at Piers 30/32 and the America’s Cup village at Piers 27/29.  Original plans called for the America’s Cup Event Authority to put up most of the money to repair the city’s piers in exchange for long-term development rights.

But with only four teams having entered for the event so far, the plans were reduced to the Port of San Francisco and the city paying for the pier upgrades, at an estimated cost of $US22 million, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Coutts still has his fingers crossed that more challengers will come to the party in the next couple of months.  So far, the start-list to find a challenger for Oracle Racing reads: Emirates Team New Zealand, Prada and Artemis.

“I haven’t heard anything definite. But we’re hoping there are going to be the Koreans, maybe one of the French teams and hopefully the Chinese,” says Coutts, who’s confident there is still time, despite the June 1 entry deadline.

“They would be one-boat programmes and there is quite a good design sitting there in the standard design package that those teams can access.”

A four-time America’s Cup winner, Coutts admits in hindsight more could have been done to attract a larger fleet.

“Maybe [the boat] should have been a one-design, or the AC72 could have been smaller. It could have been a 50 foot boat -Tom Schnackenberg suggested that in the early days,” he says.  “One of the problems teams have is that they are trying to build their brands.

“Do we have all the right answers this time? Absolutely not. But these problems have been around for more than two decades now.”

He doubts whether the event could have attracted a stronger fleet, believing this could be one of the closest regattas in recent history.  He also doubts Oracle Racing will have the considerable design advantage many perceive they will.

“I reckon it’s going to be a lot closer than other people are predicting, you know? I reckon this America’s Cup will be more about sailing. The use of technology will be important, but the way the rule is written – with boats the same length, the same weight, the same power – I think it will be a relatively even contest compared to what we have seen in the past. On these tight courses, the manoeuvering is going to be so important.”

U.S. Sailing’s Top Sailors Visit Oracle

AMERICAS CUP – ORACLE Racing welcomed to its base today Bill Hardesty and Anna Tunnicliffe, US Sailing’s Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year for their outstanding accomplishments in 2011.

Past winner Stan Honey, the ACEA Director of Technology who won the award for 2010, was on hand to honor the recipients at a luncheon in San Francisco.

Both skippers were joined by their crews for the base tour that lasted about 90 minutes. Afterwards they met with team skipper Jimmy Spithill, who’d just returned from the day’s practice session.

“It’s an amazing facility. There’s everything here you could need. It’s phenomenal to see it all,” said Tunnicliffe, who is the world’s top-ranked female match racer and is aiming to represent the U.S. in women’s match racing at the London Olympics this summer.

“Match racing multihulls is a slightly different game than the match racing we do, but it’s spectacular,” Tunnicliffe said. “Having watched the ACWS so far it seems your interactions – you have to think that much more precise in a multihull. It’s exciting and I’m looking forward to seeing the America’s Cup.”

Hardesty won the 81-boat Etchells Worlds last year and is tactician for skipper Ian Williams, the top-ranked match racing team in the world. Hardesty echoed Tunnicliffe in his observations of the ORACLE Racing base.

“We saw a pretty impressive boatbuilding operation,” said Hardesty. “There was the secret area we couldn’t get into, but the magnitude of the operation, the cleanliness and the organization is impressive.”

When asked about the America’s Cup moving to multihulls, Hardesty voiced support.

“I’ve always been a believer in advancements, and this is a good step,” Hardesty said. “It’s probably a necessary experiment. The sport needs a bit of a kick start.

“People say you can’t race multihulls, but they’ve been doing it forever in the C Class catamarans. And I watched the ACWS in San Diego, and it’s all the same stuff,” Hardesty continued. “It’s a little bit different turning radius and acceleration speeds, but the principles are all the same. The thing I find interesting is that the sailors aren’t necessarily traditional multihull sailors. They’re all good sailors, they’ve just learned to sail multihulls better.”

July Date For First AC72 ORACLE

AMERICAS CUP – At an ORACLE Racing press conference today CEO Russell Coutts described how the team’s first AC72 catamaran is in an advanced state of construction at three locations around the Pacific Rim.

Workers at the team’s base at Pier 80 in San Francisco, Core Builders Composites in New Zealand and Janicki Industries in the Pacific Northwest are targeting July for the launch of the new class of America’s Cup yacht. America’s Cup rules permit teams to launch their first AC72 yacht after July 1.

“No question the AC72 will be a big step up from the AC45 we are currently racing on the America’s Cup World Series circuit,” says team skipper James Spithill. “The AC45s have proven spectacular; the AC72s will be sensational.”

The AC72 is the new class of America’s Cup yacht that is designed to a box rule, one that sets tight limits on parameters such as length, beam, weight and wingsail area.

The team has split production of its yacht between three sites because each is a center of excellence.

At Pier 80 in the 34th America’s Cup host city, the team builds the basic molds for the hulls and crossbeams of the catamaran. The molds are then shipped to Janicki Industries, north of Seattle, Wash., where the large structures are machined to fine tolerances.

In a process in which Janicki is a world leader, high-tech resin is applied to the molds and then machined to its final shape by a five-axis mill to tolerances finer than the thickness of a sheet of paper.

“We’ve worked with Janicki for nearly 10 years because every little fraction of accuracy you achieve accumulates. Greater accuracy means less material and less weight. That means the boat is built precisely as the designers conceived it,” said shore team manager Mark Turner. MORE STORY

Crunch Time For America’s Cup

HOTLINK – San Francisco is now in the decisive phase on hosting the America’s Cup, a move that comes amid concern over the pace of fundraising to defray city costs and a fight over whether to include in the deal rights to a pier in the shadow of Coit Tower.

After a framework agreement was unanimously approved more than a year ago, Mayor Ed Lee on Tuesday submitted to the city’s Board of Supervisors a 263-page binding agreement that, if approved, would bring sailing’s premier regatta to San Francisco Bay in 2013.

“This is crunch time,” said Jane Sullivan, the city’s spokeswoman on America’s Cup issues. “The infrastructure work needs to happen” to have the races held as scheduled.

Exhibition matches are slated to begin in August, with the finals set for September 2013. The board is expected to tweak the agreement over the next three weeks. MORE STORY
