OMAN SAIL – Top 26 men and women recruited from 520 applicants as trainee sailing instructors ahead of new school opening in Sur in November

Oman Sail this week welcomed 26 outstanding men and women selected from a record 520 applicants for training as sailing instructors as part of preparations for November’s opening of the first sailing school in the Sur region.

The group of 12 male and 14 women recruits who came out on top after a rigorous selection process to identify the most suitable candidates were in Muscat for a two day Oman Sail “onboarding” introduction course before embarking on a six month “jump start” training programme.

Neil Coxon, Oman Sail Director of Sailing Development, said it was a great pleasure to welcome new trainee instructors of such high calibre after an intensive selection process that started with a pool of over 500 young Omani applicants.

“It is the biggest response we have ever had and these new trainees stood out among the many outstanding applicants in terms of excellent attitude and a real understanding of what was required for working outside in the heat, doing manual work and having the patience to be a good teacher.”

Masoud Al Maskary, Oman Sail HR director, thanked Mr Salim Al-Ruzaiqi, deputy director general of the Ministry of Manpower in Sur and the Manpower database Authority based in Muscat for providing Oman Sail with a list of potential candidates.

Of the 284 men and 236 women aged between 20 and 30 years old who signed up to join Oman Sail’s first sailing instructors trainee programme in the Sur region, 184 men and 116 women were chosen to go through to the first interview stage of the selection process.

The most suitable 64 men and 40 women interviewed then took part in a one off activity day to assess their ability for the position, after which the selected group took part in a full week of activities and assessments before the final selection was made.

The Oman Sail sailing school in Sur, which has Oman LNG as its main sponsor, will be the fourth of eight projected sailing schools to be established in the Sultanate of Oman as part of an initiative that uses the power of sport to contribute to the development of the country.

The target is for over 70 000 young Omanis to learn to sail by 2020 with those wishing to make it their sport or career supported by a “Pathway to Excellence” development programme that will nurture the best to represent Oman at international events and world championships and ultimately win a medal at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Coxon said the huge response from the Sur region was particularly satisfying evidence of the ever expanding reach of Oman Sail’s core philosophy that the power and value of sport can contribute to the development of Omani youth.

“We’ve found that the best way to develop the sport of sailing is by having Omani instructors as role models for our youngsters and this is why it is essential that all our staff for each sailing school come from the local area.

“We already have 50 qualified sailing instructors, all of whom are Omani, working at our three established sailing schools and this new group of trainees further illustrates our continuing commitment to developing talented instructors to take on this responsibility.

“It is very gratifying that our qualified Omani instructors will themselves now be training up a new generation of instructors and clearly illustrates how skills can be passed on and how development doesn’t stop once they’ve passed the instructor course. It is all part of a long term project.”

Al Maskary, Oman Sail HR director, said the basic training course for the new trainees includes a dinghy instructor assessment, a powerboat driving course, a First Aid Course and training in a number of soft skills covering a broad spectrum of areas that tie in with the tuition of technical skills.

“These include the development of a strong work ethic, qualities needed for working in a team, emotional intelligence and technical English especially with reference to sailing and customer service,” he said.

Other important areas of instruction will include teaching techniques for working with both children and adults, safety issues with regards to working with children, teaching mixed ability classes.Environment awareness, time management and events planning are also included in the training programme.

One of the new sailing instructor trainees, Ahmed Moubark Al Areimi, 34, said he applied to do the instructors course with Oman Sail because his family loves sport and having grown up on the coast he loves most water sports. His ambition is to be a national team coach for the Laser class when the new sailing school opens in Sur.

“I would like to be a sailing instructor because I can contribute to develop good sailors and represent Oman around the world. I would also like to be good at what I do and give back to the community by teaching others,” said Ahmed Al Areimi who has a background in IT and has done open water, night and day diving lessons.

OMAN AIR PREPS FOR LA ROUTE DES PRINCES

TEAM OMAN – Oman Sail’s elite crew on the MOD70 Oman Air-Musandam are preparing for one of the toughest tests of the season when they set off from Valencia in Spain on Sunday to stake their claim on the first ever La Route des Princes crown.

A brand new race strictly for multihulls, La Route des Princes will take the nine-strong fleet of boats on a challenging 3,045nm course around Europe from Spain to the Bay of Morlaix in France.

They will have to deal with light fluky winds in the Mediterranean Sea, the full force of the Portuguese trade winds and Atlantic depressions as well as the dangers posed along the rocky Irish and British coasts, with a final blast along the French Finistère shoreline.

For Oman Air-Musandam skipper Sidney Gavignet, a veteran of four Volvo Ocean Races and 20 Trans-Atlantics, with thousands of offshore racing miles under his belt, the next three weeks will ask a whole new set of questions of both him and his crew as they make the switch from training to performance mode.

“We are setting out on THE important race of the year so need to change our focus to performance,” said Gavignet.

“Our 2013 training at Grand Prix Guyader Douarnenez and the ArMen Race has been very valuable and of course we will continue to learn but the emphasis now has to be on performance because this is a one design class and the other teams are very good so we will have to be at the top of our form.

“We are going clockwise around Europe from south to north and have a big chance to get into the Portuguese trade winds which will be pretty hard on everyone because these boats are very uncomfortable.”

Winning or doing well in such a difficult race will be complicated, Gavignet added.

“Our aim is to do well right from the start and try to maintain. We will be happy if at the end we have done a good job and it shows in the results.”

The Oman Air-Musandam crew features a mix of highly experienced internationals, including offshore veterans Damian Foxall from Ireland and Neal McDonald from the UK. Fahad Al Hasni from Oman is in his second season on the MOD70 and is growing in experience by the day, while Ahmed Al Hassani is new, coming from the F18. Frenchmen Thomas Le Breton and Gilles Favennec bring Olympic and America’s Cup experience to the project. And Mohsin Al Busaidi who is one of Oman’s most celebrated sailors as the first Arab to sail around the world non stop, is currently in Oman with his wife who is due to give birth, but hopes to return to the boat as soon as he is able.

“I’m really happy with things on the boat,” Gavignet added. “There is a good team spirit and everyone is working well together on the boat and on the dock. Ahmed [Al Hassani] is quite new to the project but I’m very happy with his progress – he is learning quickly and showing some good potential and coming from an F18 background he brings good solid dinghy experience.”

Before they set off on the first leg to Lisbon on Sunday, there are two days of inshore racing (on Friday and Saturday) and an opportunity exists to open their account on the points table.

According to Omani crew Fahad Al Hasni, this will not be an easy task but one they have been practising tirelessly to achieve with 10 points on offer for an inshore race win, compared to 20 for an offshore leg.

“The inshore racing will make a difference at the end if things are tight so we need to try and earn as many points as we can from the first possible opportunity,” he said.

“We have been out sailing every day, doing what we can to eliminate errors in our manoeuvres because the fewer mistakes we make in this sort of racing the better we will do.

“It has been good fun and we are looking forward to the competition though it will be one of the hardest we have done because the standard is so high.”

La Route des Princes, with its accent on regional food and culture at stopovers in Lisbon in Portugal, Dun Laoghaire in Ireland and Plymouth in England, appeals to a diverse audience with interests across top level multihull racing to maritime history in Europe and Benicarlo artichokes, olive oil from Portugal, the famous Irish Timoleague Brown Pudding and clotted cream and fudge from Devon!

SAIL OMAN – Sailing’s world famous Ben Ainslie, who as a four-time British Olympic gold medallist is the most successful Olympic yachtsman of all time, has been named as a member of the world class jury that will decide the winners of Oman’s prestigious new Sailor of the Year Awards presented by Renaissance Services SAOG in Muscat on 14 May.

Ainslie, 35, who is also a five-time world champion title holder and America’s Cup sailor, is joined on the five member panel of judges by one of the world’s top woman sailors, Lijia Xu of China, 25, who won gold in the Laser Radial class at the 2012 Olympics.

Ainslie the gold medallist in the Finn class at the last Olympics, and Xu, are the 2012 ISAF Rolex World Sailors of the Year. It is the fourth time that Ainslie has been awarded sailing’s highest honour.

The full jury announced by Oman Sail today includes Oman’s most famous sportsman, Ali Al Habsi, who captains Oman’s National Football team and is also goalkeeper for Wigan Athletic in the UK.

Completing the panel is Hilal Al-Sinani, Oman’s National Olympic Committee representative, and Rob Andrew, an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) representative and sailing competition manager for the 2012 London Olympics.

The inaugural Sailor of the Year Awards presented by Renaissance Services SAOG and co-sponsored by Rolls-Royce, Oman Air, Muscat Daily, Technogym, the wellness Company, Nissan and Khimji Ramdas will be celebrated for the first time on Tuesday 14 May at a function at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel.

The jury has already been sent the names of male and female candidates nominated for individual and team awards in nine different categories that recognise outstanding achievements in sailing, coaching and technical skills. They will decide the final winners after a thorough two stage voting process independently observed by international auditors KPMG.

“It is a great honour for us to announce the external panel of judges who will decide the winners of our first ever Oman Sailor of the Year Awards. A group of such calibre and international status sets the highest of standards for what will become an esteemed annual event for Oman,” said Oman Sail CEO David Graham.

Graham said the candidates nominated for each award category were selected according to strict criteria and a transparent selection process audited by KPMG. “Selection was based on individual 2012 performances and evaluations by their most direct managers. A key factor applicable to all categories was an attitude evaluation scored on behaviour, punctuality, listening to managers and a willingness to learn.

“Race team members were also evaluated on fitness and sailing performance. The coaches on technical skills and the Technical Support nominees on electronic skills, sail repair, splicing halyards and sheets, engine mechanics and boat building,” said Graham.

Candidates were nominated in seven categories: Oman Air Outstanding Male Race Team Member; Nissan Outstanding Female Race Team Member; Technogym, the wellness company Outstanding International Race Team; Khimji Ramdas Technical Support Award; Youth Team of the Year; Rolls-Royce plc Male Development Coach of the Year; Rolls-Royce plc Female Development Coach of the Year.

Only the male and female winners of the Race Team Member of the Year and Development Coach of the Year awards will be eligible to be nominated as candidates for the final two most coveted awards of the event: the Renaissance Services Sailor of the Year Awards to honour the most outstanding male and female overall winners.

DAY 1 PROVIDES CHALLENGING CONDITIONS

MUSSANAH RACE WEEK – Kicked off with a light wind start, making it particularly challenging for the competitors, with 6-8kts of breeze and small chop, their focus and concentration was continually being tested, leaving them with no room for error.

After a tricky first two races Oman Sail’s very own F18 sailors Musab Al Hadi and Ahmed Al Balushi put together a winning plan and secured firsts in both the third and fourth races, but still couldn’t snatch the overall lead by French pair  Gurven Bontemp and Benjamin Amiot who won the first two races of the day. Musab comments: “It was a pretty good day, after a bad start, we decided to push hard and our plan came together, it’s great that we finished the day in the second place and we’re looking forward to racing tomorrow.” It has been a particularly busy month for Musab, as he has just come from sailing on board The Wave, Muscat.

For the F18 class, the conditions were perfect, with them occasionally able to fly one hull, some of the French competitors were particularly relieved to be sailing in the warm waters of Oman, as back home in Europe there is snow on the ground.

There was close racing at the front of the Laser Standard fleet, with ex Oman Air (Extreme 40) sailor Andy Maloney dominating the first two races, and Tom Burton, currently ranked number one in the world in the Laser Standard, winning races three and four. Burton comments: “The conditions were pretty shifty, and the course was tough to read, it was all about the pre-start, and winning the start proved crucial, up the beat it was about committing to one side of the course. Good to see some pretty strong competition out here.”

In the Radial class, we saw the Singapore team dominating the first two races, whilst Volvo Ocean sailor Adel Khalid of Abu Dhabi, sat in 4th place for the first lap of the third race, he made an impressive come back on the final downwind leg to claim first position. Adel comments: “I made the gains by surfing the waves downwind. It was tough for me because I am a keelboat sailor, and no used to radials, also I’m 82kg, much heavier than the Singapore team, who are really good and have clearly practiced a lot harder than me, so I have to work really hard. Hopefully the wind will pick up over the next few days.” Adel was the Emarati crew member on board Team Abu Dhabi in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, and he is set to sail in the 2014 round the world race as well.

Radial Sailor, Amos Lim of Singapore and winner of the final race of the day comments: “The conditions were alright, a bit light for me, but the racing was fair and close.”

On the RSX Windsurf course the competitors were forced to work extra hard, with light winds, they must rely on strength and fitness to get them round the course. Adam Holm of Sweden, winner of all of today’s races commented: “I feel like I have just run a marathon!” By the end of the day they were able to do some railing, and they are hoping for breezier conditions tomorrow.

On Thursday and Friday, we will see the number of competitors grow, as the Optimist and Q’ba fleet take to the water. In the lead up to their race days, world renowned Optimist coach Chris Atkins will be putting the young sailors through their paces. Youth sailors are representing 6 different nations including Oman. Racing starts at 11am each day, and with competition being so close, we’re guaranteed a spectacle until the very end, with the final day of racing on Saturday 16th March.

This is the third edition of Mussanah Race Week, and it appears to be on the right course to becoming one of the world’s most prominent dinghy regattas. With Mussanah’s ability to offer fantastic sailing conditions; warm water and air temperatures and a good sea breeze, this event continues to grow from strength to strength. Today paid testament to this as the 92 competitors put on an impressive display of their skills, whilst racing hard for Mussanah’s glory.

Events director Issa Al Ismaili, says Oman Sail aims to have Mussanah Race Week recognized as an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Cup event: “It is our aim to run the event with such international standard and  gain recognition as a top dinghy event.”

Antonio La Madrid- ISAF Sailing World Cup Manager is also in Mussanah Race Week for a site visit to see the venue that will be hosting the ISAF Youth Worlds 2016 that the Sultanate won the bidding rights last year. “ It’s a fantastic venue, we’re very impressed with it, we have everything we need in order for the event to work well, one advantage is the accommodation is at the venue, we’re also very happy with the race management team, and I’m confident that this event will be recognised as it’s being run in a professional way.”

Recognition from ISAF officials cements the fact that the Laser World Championships, which will be held in Mussanah from November 2013- January 2014, are sure to be a success. It is the combination of perfect conditions, idyllic location and professional committee that will mean the 1,000 visiting sailors will participate in a unique, first class event.

MUSSANAH RACE WEEK – Oman Sail’s Mussanah Race Week offers a unique approach to sailing events, with 2 days of bespoke training sessions, allowing participants to develop and improve their sailing skills in the lead up to the event, gaining top tips from the masters themselves. Experts, Olympians and professional coaches in Laser Standard, Radial, 4.7, F18, Optimist and RSX Windsurfing, from all around the world are on site to provide the sailors with specifically tailored training.

Issa Al Ismaili, Oman Sail Event Director comments: “We are very grateful to the coaches for agreeing to give their time to the competitors of this event; it provides a unique platform for participants to develop and improve their sailing skills which has always been one of the main objectives for Mussanah Race Week: to develop skills, increase awareness to the sport and eventually create new heroes and world champions.”

Faisal Al Qutaiti is one of Oman Sail’s up and coming windsurfers, he comments on his experience in the coaching sessions: “Today was great, the wind made it difficult, but it picked up towards the end; I managed to win some of the training races, it’s a good experience to be able sail against the other competitors from different countries, it was interesting to see their different techniques.”

Topics which the coaches have been addressing include: upwind and downwind speed runs, allowing the sailors time to see how their overall boat speed fares against one another, studying the local tides and currents and adapting to the wind strength so that they feel confident that they understand the waters in which they are racing, and starting practice; the start is one of the most important parts of the race, and it is key that the competitors are comfortable with the length of the start line and the size of the fleet. With the coaching sessions in place, the sailors will be able to begin the regatta feeling fully prepared and confident, as they remove the worry of sailing in unfamiliar waters.

Olympic sailor turned professional coach, Hugh Styles comments: “Fantastic to see the variety of people involved in the regatta. There was lots of enthusiasm from the sailors especially in such tricky light conditions. We have already seen big gains for the sailors in this light fickle wind and we hope we get more wind tomorrow.”

The Olympic Windsurf class, known as RSX is growing in popularity, and with competitors representing 4 different nations, Mussanah Race Week coaching sessions offer the windsurfers the rare opportunity to compare notes. Koray Ezer, Turkish National Champion and RSX Windsurf coach states: “The sessions act as a great arena to share ideas and techniques in this rapidly developing class. We’re also working on shaping the sailors on the water training and fitness strategies, the competitors are using this event as a warm up event to the European Championships, so it is a key learning time for all.”

As well as experiencing first class coaching, the competitors are also encouraged to make full use of the first class facilities on offer at the Musannah Sports City, a leading sports venue, which will host the Laser World Championships later this year, includes a fully equipped gym with two specialist fitness instructors on site, a large fleet of safety vessels, top class restaurant, and luxury accommodation, including three swimming pools for the sailors to relax in.

With all of these fantastic opportunities on offer, the sailors are guaranteed a great regatta, whilst improving their skills with top tips from the world’s best.

SPRINT FINISH TO QATAR

RACE NEWS – The first leg of the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour was completed in glorious sunshine today with crews fighting out a sprint finish due to light winds off the coast of Qatar and throughout the 100 mile first leg from Bahrain.

Leading home the world-class crews by a distance of 250m to establish an early lead in the region’s only long distance offshore sailing race, covering 760 miles in 15 day race between Bahrain and Muscat, was Team BAE Systems (Oman), skippered by world-renowned Cedric Pouligny.

Completing the top three positions, with only a boat length between them was EFG Bank (Monaco) skippered by Sidney Gavignet in second and the youthful Team Messe Frankfurt led by Marcel Herrera in third.

Inspired by organisers Oman Sail to encourage one of the region’s fastest growing sports and reignite the rich maritime heritage of the Gulf, the third edition of the showcase sailing event got off to a slow start as Issa Al Ismaili, Director of Events at the race’s organiser Oman Sail said:

“Firstly congratulations to Team BAE Systems and skipper Cedric Pouligny who made the best of the conditions and his experience of having completed Sailing Arabia – The Tour in the two previous editions. Today we’re just pleased to get in some racing at all. Obviously to have no wind is not ideal but at least the teams will be fresh for tomorrow’s in-port sailing off Qatar. It was a sprint finish in the end but everyone knows this is only the start and there is a lot of competitive sailing and miles to race over the next 14 days.”

Speaking having secured finished first after the opening leg in 4 hours 49 minutes and 12 seconds, Cedric Pouligny, BAE Systems skipper said;

“After waiting all night with so little wind it was tight out there and felt more like an inshore race by the time we got started. There was a little positioning but it was mostly straight-line sailing. We won after getting a good start and it’s always a pleasure to win the opening leg. Tomorrow is a new day and the in-port sailing so close to the harbour on Qatar’s National Sport Day should be fun.”

In contrast to last year’s EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, when competitors at the start were buffeted by 30 knot winds, this year’s race departed Bahrain during a beautiful afternoon yesterday, but unfortunately without a breath of wind, severely restricting racing.

Keith Gapp, EFG Bank, Head of Strategy and Marketing, EFG International said on the 2nd placed position of EFG Bank (Monaco);

“Sidney Gavignet and EFG Bank (Monaco) are well placed to take control of this year’s EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour.  There is everything to play for over the next legs and we are supporting Sidney and his Omani team all the way to a podium finish.”

Race Director of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, Gilles Chiorri, explained sport sailing is 100% reliant on the co-operation of nature. “It is sailing and in this sport you have to deal with weather conditions – whether it is good or bad. It seems that the weather forecast for the coming days will be slightly better, so we’re looking forward to the next two weeks of race action”

Over the course of yesterday afternoon and through the night the nine crews, taking part in the region’s only long distance offshore sailing race, were forced to use their engines to motor down the course and spent most of the early hours of the morning waiting for the wind to materialise by the ‘Fairway’ mark, just off the northeast coast of Qatar.

At just after 0800 this morning, the breeze began to fill in and the Oman Sail Race Committee was able to set a 46 miles course towards Doha, south down Qatar’s east coast.

In the early part of the shortened race pre-race favourites, Bertrand Pacé skipper of Team AISM, the 2011 winner and former America’s Cup helmsman, got off to the best start but as the boats continued down the race course it was Pacé’s French compatriot Cedric Pouligny on Team BAE Systems who had just pulled into the lead and maintained that lead until the finish in Qatar, ahead of French compatriot Sidney Gavignet’s team on EFG Bank (Monaco).

British record breaking singlehanded round the world sailor Dee Caffari, who is skippering the all-female crew of Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat, comprising of 50% Omani sailors said:

“It’s painful, but we’ve had a good sail at the end. The race director did well getting a race in. It was sheet glass the whole way and we waited four hours hanging around for daylight to see if we would race in a sea of glass. But eventually the wind came.”

Despite the slow start for teams arriving into Qatar, racing is perfectly scheduled tomorrow to let all communities in Qatar and sailing enthusiasts celebrate the sporting public holiday on Tuesday 12th February. Free to attend and open to all, the family day let’s all spectators watch the magnificent fleet of Farr30 boats in action as they battle it out in Qatari waters to secure top points in the in-port racing series following the first leg of sailing between Bahrain and Qatar.

Initiated and supported by the Qatar Olympic Committee, National Sports Day includes a host of sporting events from gymnastics and athletics to football and karate, and is designed to inspire a new generation of active sports fans, unite the community and discover local talent.

This season promises to be the best yet, with some of the world’s best sailors competing in the ideal sailing conditions of the Gulf. EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour 2013 represents the culmination of three years’ development in offshore racing in the region, and the roster of competitors reflects the adoption and recognition of this unique event by the international sailing community.

Competing aboard identical Farr 30 yachts, the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour has attracted nine crews representing five different nations, led locally by Oman’s Team Renaissance, Royal Navy of Oman, Team BAE Systems and the all – female Team Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat. Two teams will compete on behalf of the UAE, Team Abu Dhabi and Team AISM representing the neighbouring Emirate of Dubai. International crews include EFG Bank (Monaco), Team Delft Challenge – TU Delft (Holland) and the Team Messe Frankfurt (EU).

Qatar is the first of seven that will see the fleet visit stopover ports first in Qatar, then along the UAE coastline to Abu Dhabi, Dubai (new to the course this year) and Ras Al Khaimah before passing through the Strait of Hormuz and on to Oman, visiting Dibba, Mussanah and the finish in Muscat.

Taking in four countries and eight ports of call, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour is a showcase of everything that the Gulf has to offer in terms of state-of-the-art facilities and idyllic sailing conditions

Leaving Manama on February 10th, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour calls at Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Dibba and Mussanah and ends February 25th in Muscat.  The racing will include in-port racing at selected locations.

RACE NEWS  - EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, the region’s only long distance offshore sailing race started today with nine world-class crews including a host of elite sailors from the Middle East taking on the unique sailing challenge and endurance race between Bahrain and Muscat.

Inspired by organisers Oman Sail to encourage one of the region’s fastest growing sports and reignite the rich maritime heritage of the Gulf, the third edition of the showcase sailing event was officially launched at Amwaj Marina ahead of 15 days fierce competition around the coastline of four different countries covering 760 nautical miles.

The opening ceremony, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and the President of Bahrain Olympic Committee, was attended by Sailing Federation dignitaries from GCC nations, race officials, sponsors, skippers and crew of the boats competing for the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour 2013 trophy.

Khalifa Abdulla Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain Maritime Sports Association said: “Bahrain is extremely proud to host the opening ceremony and first leg of the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour. Thanks to the inspiring vision of Oman Sail a world-class event has been established that unites the region through sailing while also promoting the sport to a new generation. As the crews set sail for Qatar on the first leg we wish all involved a thrilling race from start to finish.”

The growing stature of the event and its adoption by the international sailing community is reflected in the diverse range of teams entered from around the world this year with crews hailing from Monaco, Holland and the EU.

Speaking ahead of the first leg Issa Al Ismaili, Director of Events at the race’s organiser Oman Sail said; “The vision of Oman Sail is to develop the region sailing talent and reignite the rich maritime heritage. Through EFG Bank Sailing Arabia The Tour, Oman Sail is also providing and exciting platform to develop people and leave a lasting legacy.”

“The tour is bringing together the best sailing talent in the GCC and from elite sailors around the world and we believe that every leg of the race will encourage sailing across the GCC by showcasing local role models and motivating youngsters to try something new,” added Ismaili.

The 100 mile leg to Qatar is the first of seven that will see the fleet visit stopover ports first in Qatar, then along the UAE coastline to Abu Dhabi, Dubai (new to the course this year) and Ras Al Khaimah before passing through the Strait of Hormuz and on to Oman, visiting Dibba, Mussanah and the finish in Muscat.

Amongst the favourites is Dubai-based Team AISM, skippered by Bertrand Pacé. Aside from winning the 2011 event, Pacé is a former America’s Cup helmsman and, relevant to this event, has won the Tour de France a la Voile eight times in its 35 year history. However with a similar pedigree is Cedric Pouligny, skipper of Team BAE Systems, which has finished third in the past two races.

New to EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour is Oman Sail’s MOD70 skipper Sidney Gavignet, on this occasion helming EFG Bank (Monaco). Gavignet’s crew includes British round the world veteran Neal McDonald and Oman’s Fahad Al Hasni.

British yachtswoman Dee Caffari, the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world singlehanded both eastabout and westabout, is returning as skipper of Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat, once again sailed exclusively by women. Caffari is joined by American round the world sailor Katie Pettibone, but also a squad of six up and coming Omani female sailors, four of whom will be on board at any one time. Because the girls are smaller, they will race with eight, while the boys teams will be sailed by six or seven crew.

This year Caffari says they have had more training time. “We did the Muscat Regatta and the Muscat–Kashab offshore race in November. We won the inshore regatta and came second in the offshore regatta. Caffari sailed two more weeks with the team in January but stresses that as they are part of Oman Sail’s keelboat training program and they sail regularly even when she isn’t there.

Racing in EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour is a unique experience, with the desert rolling into the sea for much of the course, punctuated by the metropolises the event visits en route, before the boats pass the rocky mountainous Omani coast around the Strait of Hormuz, exiting the Gulf in the Gulf of Oman. On the first leg the depth is rarely more than 4m, weather forecasts are typically unreliable and off Qatar and the UAE there are numerous oil fields to negotiate. “There’s never a dull moment,” says Caffari.

In addition to Bertrand Pacé’s team, UAE hopes are being placed on the Emirates most famous sailor Adil Khaled, who competed in the last Volvo Ocean Race aboard the Ian Walker-skippered Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing.

Khaled’s crew is a mix of sailors from Abu Dhabi and Dubai. “It is my first time with a fully Emirati crew. It is a great thing for my country and I am so proud, because it was my dream to have a full Emirati crew after the Volvo Ocean Race. We will try our best. I don’t know what will happen – we’ll see.”

Team Renaissance’s Omani skipper Mohsin Al Busaidi, was the first Arab to sail non-stop around the world and is competing in this event for a third time, the second time as skipper. His crew is mainly Omani new recruits alongside two French-speaking heavyweights sailmaker Bruno Dubois and navigator Thierry Douillard.

“Last year I finished seventh overall – not too bad for a new team,” says Al Busaidi. “We were on the podium three times and we finished the last leg second.” Typically Al Busaidi says the racing gets more competitive as the event progresses and hopefully they will be able to use their home waters advantage on the concluding two legs – however possibly not to the same degree as the Royal Navy of Oman team led by Qais Al Mamari.

International youth competition also comes to the race in the form of Team Messe Frankfurt, mainly British crew from the University of Plymouth, but with a German skipper in Marcel Herrera. They are joined by the Dutch team of Kay Heemskerk aboard Team Delft Challenge, previous competitors on the Tour de France a’ la Voice but making their competitive debut in the Middle East.

MUSCAT AND OMAN AIR TAKE 1st & 2nd

EXTREME SAILING SERIES – Never has the conclusion of an Extreme Sailing Series season been so uncertain, so nailbiting, but The Wave, Muscat, held their nerve to win the final Act in Rio de Janeiro and with it, overall victory in the 2012 Series.

Oman Air had a strong finish to sail past Red Bull for 3rd place in Rio, good enough to give them 2nd overall in the Series.

The two Omani boats could hardly have wished for a better conclusion to an exciting and dramatic season that began in Muscat and took the teams around the world to China, Istanbul, Portugal, Great Britain, France and finally Brazil.

Leigh McMillan, the skipper of The Wave, Muscat, said this was the most nerve-wracking conclusion to any season of the Extreme Sailing Series. “We’ve had some lucky moments at times, but thanks to the guys around me, they always keep me in good shape, keep me looking forwards at the next opportunity.” The start of the final double-points race in Rio was just such an example. “Just before the start we saw some big gusts coming down the right-hand side of the course, so we set up to start by the committee boat. But then the breeze shut down, and it looked like it was all over for us.” After starting dead last, The Wave, Muscat, sniffed out some new breeze and within two minutes was back up in the top three.

Groupe Edmond de Rothschild also came through strongly to win the final race, but a second place for McMillan was sufficient to give The Wave, Muscat, victory in Rio de Janeiro with 192.2 points, a mere 0.2 points ahead of the French team.

Hashim Al Rashdi’s participation in today’s excitement was in doubt after the Omani bowman was injured in a collision between The Wave, Muscat, and Team Brasil yesterday. “I had some painkiller injections for my back,” said Al Rashdi. “Even if there was still some pain, I gave 100 per cent today, and I’m very, very happy to win the Extreme Sailing Series. It has been a great, great day.”

Oman Air climbed up to 3rd place on the Rio podium in the dying moments of the final race. Morgan Larson’s team were vying with Red Bull Sailing Team, who at one point in the final race were looking like they might even take victory in Rio. But the fickle wind continued to play its cruel tricks on Guanabara Bay and Red Bull faded badly on the final lap. “It was unfortunate for Red Bull, and it wasn’t at all easy out there. But I’ve got to be pretty happy with it all on Oman Air. This event has been a high point for us. There were plenty of opportunities for us to unfold as a team, and we had some tough moments at the back in some races. But everybody on the team always kept their chin up, stayed positive even when things weren’t going great. Today was a great test of our character and I’m really happy how things worked out for us.”

Oman Air’s bowman Nasser Al Mashari looked back on a great year with enormous pride. “It was a very hard day today, but it ended well for Oman with two teams in 1st and 2ndoverall. It is a historic day for sailing in Oman, a great way to celebrate the past five years of the Oman Sail project.” Al Mashari said he hoped the achievements of the two Omani Extreme Sailing Series teams would inspire young Omanis to try sailing for themselves. “The door is open for anyone to learn to sail, and I hope that one day we will see Oman represented at the Olympic Games.”

Michael Lenarduzzi, CEO of The Wave, Muscat, commented: “The continued success of our boat in the series is testimony to the world class sailing talent and development programs for young sailors available in Oman. With the success of the Extreme Sailing Series boat we have witnessed the development of a new sailing school at The Wave, Muscat which is spearheading the training of tomorrow’s world class sailors and bringing regional and international attention to our new world class marina facilities at The Wave.

“Congratulations to the whole The Wave, Muscat team on their success in the series in 2012 and for highlighting the great talent emerging in Oman.” Added Lenarduzzi.

Thanks to the success of the previous editions of the race, and Oman Sail’s commitment to youth mentoring and sail training, we felt that the sponsorship was a good fit with our sponsorship goals, and we are confident that EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour 2013 will go a long way to establishing the sport in the hearts of the Gulf’s people.”

Issa Al Ismaili, Oman Sail Director of Events said the GCC is an exceptional sailing destination complete with unbeatable sailing conditions, local talent and decades of sailing heritage.

“We are expecting a bumper 2013 edition of the tour with at least 12 competing teams. The number of teams participating in the event has grown year on year from six in 2011 to nine in 2012 and the event is fast establishing the Middle East as an international yacht racing destination that is considered part of the international sailing agenda. “

OMAN SAIL GETS READY TO HOST RC44 REGATTA 2013

RC44 RACING – Oman Sail is preparing to roll out the red carpet to a host of influential sailing guests after Muscat, the capital of Oman, was selected as a venue for the prestigious RC44 regatta at the start of 2013.

Supported by some of the world’s leading business figures as owner/drivers and their star-studded sailing crews, the high-status RC44 circuit has become one of the most popular and competitive one-design classes in the sport.

The RC44 Championship Tour is now recognised as both a top sporting event and a platform for some high powered business networking, making it an ideal vehicle to advance Oman’s plans to drive forward economic development by attracting tourists to the Sultanate and encouraging foreign investment.

On the back of three consecutive years of hosting the Extreme Sailing Series, the RC44 regatta is set to take place from 30 January to 3 February 2013 at The Wave, Muscat.

“Our biggest challenge is to ensure the right sort of event for this calibre of individual. The Wave, Muscat is the home of Oman Sail with plenty of big boat berthing in the marina, our new sailing school plus all the technical and human resources facilities which made it an ideal venue,” said Issa Al Ismaili, Event Director at Oman Sail.

“Unlike the Extreme Sailing Series, there will be no public activities or race village but the focus will be on VIP hospitality which will revolve around the owners and their guests.

“So we are putting together a programme of social functions on and off the water, involving local dignitaries and sponsors, designed to showcase Oman.

“It is part of Oman Sail’s mission to promote the country both as tourism and inward investment destination so we are opening doors to new investment opportunities and longer term visions by welcoming RC44 owners, followers of the RC44 class and other high calibre individuals from the business world,” said Al Ismaili.

Up to 15 teams are expected to attend the five-day event, which will be the first of five RC44 regattas in 2013 with Italy, Sweden, Portugal and Spain also chosen as host countries.

Oman is fast becoming a favoured sailing destination both among professional and recreational sailors with the Extreme 40 events attracting worldwide attention and the recent announcement that the Laser World Championship will be raced out of Oman in 2013. The addition of the prestigious RC44 regatta, with its high calibre crews and state-of-the-art high performance boats, is set to strengthen Oman Sail’s reputation as an event host delivering professional, well-organised and highly rated sailing events.

OMAN YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM

TEAM OMAN – Sport can be used as a powerful tool for the development of the Omani youth and one of the main objectives of the recently launched Oman Sail Youth programme is simply to use the sport of sailing to create good citizens.

This was one of the key messages conveyed to media at a round table briefing in Muscat today to introduce the aims, objectives and early successes of the comprehensive new Youth Programme launched in February this year.

By introducing a new generation to sailing the Youth Programme supports Oman Sail’s overall objective of promoting national pride by succeeding on the world’s sporting stage, promoting elite Omani sailors as role models to inspire the youth of Oman and ultimately winning a medal for the Sultanate in the 2024 Olympic Games.

“We are targeting the youth to get involved with sport because of the positive values associated with sportsmanship.  Achieving success in sport helps drive national pride and self worth. Our message to parents is let your children come sailing because it is good for them,” Rashid Al Kindi, National Sailing Team Manager for Oman Sail.

Rashid said sailing is a fun and exciting way to reinforce strong family and social values while rekindling Oman’s famed maritime heritage. Young sailors also get the opportunity to learn new transferable life skills and are given English language lessons.

Marina Psichogiou, Youth Development Manager for Oman Sail added, “Sailing promotes an active and healthy lifestyle whether these young sailors go on to become champion sailors or not. If we can use sport to create good citizens we will have succeeded in what we have set out to do.”

She said involvement in sport could also help avoid anti-social behaviour and issues like obesity.

“Sailing encourages leadership, teamwork and communication skills. Confidence and willingness is needed to further goals, aims and ambitions. They need to build strength for endurance on the water. Above all sailing requires self discipline, integrity, honesty, sincerity, humility, courage and flexibility plus a strong work ethic and the ability to maintain a sense of humour under pressure. This is what our young sailors will learn and keep with them for life.”

The Oman Sail Youth Programme is structured for all levels and interests with sail training offered through the competitive Oman Sail Racing Club and the more social Oman Sail Youth Club at sailing centres at Marina Bandar, Musaanah and the Wave Muscat.

Oman Sail Racing Club currently has 20 youngsters training 3 times a week at each sailing centre training and competing at local inter club regattas. So far 14 of them have had the opportunity to travel to Tanzania, Bahrain and Egypt to participate at international regattas.

The Youth Club has 60 sailors at each centre two times per week and here the accent is on fun and enjoyment.

At the broadest level the aim is to introduce an incredible 70 000 Omani youth to sailing by 2020.

Youngsters with talent and potential for sailing are identified according to their confidence in the water, ability to listen to and execute instructions and sheer enjoyment of the sport.

A strict selection process was used to select the right sailors for the international events this year with five sailors participating in the Optimist African Championships in Tanzania, five at the Kings Cup in Bahrain and four at the Alexandria International Laser Regatta in Egypt.

“Our sailors are still very young and inexperienced so their participation at these events was not results driven. It was more about the adventure of travel and a fun life experience to learn about new people, cultures and places while being introduced to top level racing.”

Oman Sail aims to have established an elite National Youth Squad by February 2013 to compete at international level. The long term plan being for an Omani youth team to participate in the Youth Olympics in 2014, for a team to finish in the top fifty percent of the fleet at the 2015 Optimist World Championships, in the top fifty percent of the fleet at the 2018 Youth Olympics and in the top 20 percent of the fleet at the 2020 ISAF Youth World Championships.

Oman Sail believes youth sailing will grow exponentially by 2016 with the Elite Squad swelling to 65 sailors, the Racing Club to 410 and the Youth Club to 630 at each sailing centre. Two more sailing centres open in Sohar and Sur in 2013 with Khasab and Salalah following by 2015.

OMAN SAIL LEADING

EXTREME SAILING SERIES – Nice, the penultimate Act in the 2012 Extreme Sailing Series, sees Oman Sail’s two teams topping the overall leaderboard with The Wave, Muscat seven points clear of second placed Oman Air, in turn one point ahead of Red Bull Sailing Team.

The Wave, Muscat started training on Saturday in the glamorous Cote d’Azur venue and skipper Leigh McMillan says it is vital they maintain a consistent performance when racing starts on Thursday.

“We are getting to the real crunch of the season, so we are trying to bring on our best performance and secure it as best we can going into the last event,” commented McMillan. “Our objective really is to finish on the podium for the next two events, then it is secure. So we need to keep sailing aggressively and keep pushing hard to make sure that we do get those podiums we need.”

Joining The Wave, Muscat after making her Extreme Sailing Series debut with Team Cardiff in the last Act, is recently crowned Olympic 470 silver medallist Hannah Mills. She is taking the 5th person slot on board in place of Bleddyn Mon: “I’m really excited. It is a great opportunity for me sailing with these boys to learn about multihull sailing and about team work,” she said.

The weather forecast for later this week is changing by the day, but has recently improved with 15-20 knots predicted. Oman Air skipper, American Morgan Larson, says that he prefers this, since they changed fifth man from Max Bulger to marginally heavier New Zealand Laser sailor Andy Moloney. “I wouldn’t say we have an advantage, but it is a little better suited for us to have a little more wind. We started out the season with a lighter 5th and we did pretty well in light winds and we made that change expecting some of the windier venues. We knew Nice would be a risk…”

But Leigh McMillan warns that it is always hard to predict the weather on the Cote d’Azur. “Nice can be quite different to what’s happening just a few miles offshore as well. It would be good to open the boats up a bit and mix it up.”

To date Oman Sail boats have won every Act of this year’s Extreme Sailing Series, a record the teams would like to continue. Oman Air is perhaps on a roll having won in Cardiff, their second victory this year after Muscat at the beginning of the season, but they are going to have their work cut out if they are to eat into The Wave, Muscat’s lead.

Larson will also have to keep an eye on Austrian double Tornado Olympic gold medallist Roman Hagara and his Red Bull Extreme Sailing team just one point behind them. “We just have to keep sailing the boat well and keep improving our own team work,” says Larson. “Red Bull have years of experience and I was surprised to hear that they have never won an Act. They are always the toughest guys going into the last day.”

For both the Omani Extreme 40 crewmen – Hashim Al Rashdi on The Wave, Muscat and Nasser Al Mashari on Oman Air – it is the second time they have visited Nice. Al Mashari competed last year while Al Rashdi was present in a training capacity.

“Nice is a really lovely place,” says Al Rashdi. “There’s sunshine, it’s a really beautiful city, friendly people, the weather – I like it, it feels like home. Hopefully this year we will get some more wind. We are looking forward to doing well in this event. We have been in Nice for four days and have been training every day, twice a day, so we are looking forward to racing.”

For Oman Air’s Nasser Al Mashari, France is very much more familiar, not only from racing here last year but because he has previously competed in the month-long Tour de France a la Voile around the French coastline.

“Nice is a marvellous place,” he says. “It’s great for the tourists. There are many things to see here and very close to us there is a lovely mountain. We climbed it last year and it is a great view. It is a pretty good place to sail. Today is a bit cloudy, but it’s going to get a bit windier – last year it was very light. We hope to do the same as Cardiff and win the regatta!”

OMAN SAIL FIGHTS FOR THE PODIUM

TEAM OMAN – It might only be a short sprint but the final leg of the MOD70 2012 European Tour from Marseilles to Genoa, which started today, is the pinnacle of a three month campaign for Musandam-Oman Sail who have set their sights on a podium place.

Having battled their way on to the podium in leg three from Dublin to Cascais, the team subsequently won the Cascais City race and the Cascais to Marseille offshore leg and scored a fourth in the Around Portugal. A third place in the Marseille City Race this weekend has left them determined to hold on to their hard fought for third overall.

The crew on the Oman flagship is pushing hard on this last 650 mile passage and the bonus points at the first scoring gate in front of the Roucas Blanc marina at the end of a loop around the Frioul Islands was their first priority.

Progress was painfully slow for the fleet of trimarans as light winds restricted their speeds but according to skipper Sidney Gavignet, who has been working with this crew since the start of the KRYS Ocean Race in July, this would not prevent Musandam-Oman Sail from putting pressure on their rivals.

“We are workers on Musandam-Oman Sail. We are missing experience so we deal with that by working hard, using our own method and being serious.

“Our results show that our method is working which is good news for the future because we can keep working like this and hopefully close in on the leaders.”

“There is a lot to be decided on this leg – between first and second for Spindrift and Foncia and third, fourth and fifth between Gitana, Race for Water and us. Our tactic is to start first then go quicker and quicker and put more distance between us and the second boat and extend,” he joked.

Leaving Marseille proved emotional for Gavignet and his mixed crew of European and Omani sailors. The French south coast port was where he learned to sail before his sailing career took off. It was also the place where Mohsin Al Busaidi met up with his wife and daughter after some extended time apart, owing to his Oman Sail commitments.

He is back on board for the final leg, having missed Leg 4 from Cascais to Marseille and was keener than ever to get a good result as the MOD70 European Tour draws to a close.

“I’m hoping to get a good result from this leg and really looking forward to it because I didn’t do the last one,” he said.

“We improved a lot in the last leg. Every leg, we set ourselves a goal and in this one I am working on the position of weight and how to heel the boat.

“We enjoyed Marseille because we visited a lot of places and met a lot of people – it was really good to be part of the event.”

MUSANDAM-OMAN SAIL WINS CASCAIS CITY RACE

MOD70 TOUR NEWS – Just a few days ago Musandam-Oman Sail edged on to the podium after finishing 3rd in offshore leg 2 from Dublin, Ireland to Cascais, Portugal, so this – their first win – is a welcome step up for the relatively inexperienced team.

“It’s just so good. You know I would like to party with the team but we cannot because tomorrow we go again. That’s the rhythm and the pace of this European Tour. But it’s great. We won three races of the six. It’s a great win. We are very glad,” said Gavignet.

“It is hard to pinpoint one improvement. I mean we are improving from the beginning. We started far behind but we improve. From the beginning we had some trouble. We lost one of our crew to injury, another was sick and we lost our daggerboard in Dublin. But we kept going with a positive spirit. We are just trying to make some progress little by little and that’s it you know. Nothing special. We are just trying to work well in a good atmosphere to get the best out of everyone.

“The Omani sailors still need to progress a lot, just like all of us. I am hard with them and hard on myself and it’s a balance between pushing them too much and keeping them very positive. I need to show them what the problems are so they can learn so it is a constant discussion, sometimes pushing, sometimes being softer, but always trying to help them improve.

“It is a great adventure. It is not easy every day but it is a great adventure to sail on the Omani boat, to sail with Omani crew and with an international team,” said Gavignet.

Oman’s Moshin Al Busaidi was delighted with the result today as he watched his crew mates Fahad and Khamisget thrown into the water in celebration.

“We had been leading the group here in Cascais and we were torn about racing today and the possibility of losing our position! But I think the team and the skipper have worked very hard to stay in first place.

“Coming third in Leg 2 gave us a boost and made us feel more positive and optimistic. We did a good job and I hope tomorrow, in the 3rd leg, that we will do better again,” said Al Busaidi.

Musandam-Oman Sail was top of the leaderboard in Cascais from Friday through Saturday but a fifth place in Sunday’s first race of the day saw them slipping by just one point to Spindrift racing. However the win in the sixth and final race put them back up to the top spot with a two point lead over Spindrift racing.

It was a nail-biting finale to the Cascais City races as three boats, FONCIA, Race for Water and Groupe Edmond de Rothschild, were called over the start line early. Musandam-Oman Sail managed to emerge from the melee with the lead and stay ahead around the two lap course. But not without pressure from Race for Water who after making a good recovery at the top end of the first windward leg were breathing down the neck ofMusandam-Oman Sail until the finish.

Thick fog and very light five knot winds delayed the start of racing on Sunday. The first race was shortened as the sea mist started to roll in again. Racing was postponed for a further thirty minutes for conditions to improve and for the tide to turn before Sunday’s second race, the sixth and final race of the series finally got away in building 8-10 knot breeze.

Monday sees the start of the MOD70 European Tour Leg 3 which will take the fleet around Portugal on a course from Cascais to Porto back to Cascais to Sines and back to Cascais for the finish on Tuesday afternoon. Weather depending the Sines leg may be dropped.

Cascais City Race results after six races

1 Musandam Oman Sail 64 pts (10, 10, 12, 12, 8, 12)

2 Spindrift racing 62 pts (11, 11, 9, 10, 12, 9)

3 Groupe Edmond de Rothschild 59 pts (12, 9, 10, 9, 9, 10)

4 Race for Water 58pts (9,12, 8, 8, 10,11)

5 FONCIA 57pts (8, 8, 11,11, 11, 8)

MOD70 EUROPEAN TOUR – Musandam-Oman Sail is top of the Cascais City Race leader board after winning their first race of the MOD70 European Tour and posting two third places on Friday’s opening day of racing in Portugal.

“Of course it is nice to win. It is nice to get a pay off for our hard work and to come ashore knowing we did good work. We have a lot more racing ahead of us and a lot more work to do, but today felt good, the team is progressing,” said skipper Sidney Gavignet.

Today’s three races were the first of eight scheduled for Cascais, the coastal resort made famous in the past for being the Portuguese Royal family’s holiday destination of choice and more recently as host to high profile sailing events including the Olympics, the Volvo Ocean Race and the America’s Cup World Series.

Musandam-Oman Sail’s successful day of racing which puts them one point ahead on the overall standing in Portugal so far comes on the back of their podium third place in the 975 mile Leg 2 of the MOD70 European Tour from Dublin to Cascais.

“I am very proud of my team and my skipper and our achievement for Oman on Leg 2. We are getting better and better, but we have a long way to go still. It was a great feeling to finish on the podium for the first time during the European Tour. Today was also great with two thirds and a first for the first time. We are very happy and are looking forward to tomorrow,” said Mohsin Al Busaidi.

CLOSE RACING AGAIN IN MOD70 FLEET

MOD70 EUROPEAN TOUR UPDATE – JUST IN! – We reported Oman-Sail was in second place this morning but they have now just pulled into the lead!  Check out the latest report below:

Latest position reports show the Omani flagship with a 1.2 mile advantage over former leaders Spindrift but with just eight miles separating all five trimarans, the celebrations are not likely to start just yet, according to helmsman Brian Thompson.

“We are not punching the air because you have to be in the lead at the finish so we are just concentrating on going fast and not making any mistakes but it feels good and is a pay off for all our hard work so far,” Thompson said.

“It shows you how close the MOD 70 racing is and we have seen on this leg with Race for Water how a small problem can set you back though they are back in sight now. We are in a good position but when things are this close, it’s important we stay focussed.”

The remaining 350 miles of the second leg from Dun Laoghaire in Ireland to Cascais are likely to present a few hours of frustration with the strong breeze likely to ease later on Tuesday when the fleet is set to grind to a halt with progress uncertain.

For the moment though, the temperatures are rising as they move south and, charging along at more than 27 knots, Sidney Gavignet’s crew on Musandam-Oman Sail are maintaining the highest speeds in the fleet.

Omani helm Fahad Al Hasni has made a significant contribution to their progress with some fast driving undergennaker while Moshin Al Busaidi has been key to the smooth sail changes and running all the systems on board.

Both crew members were excited by the current success of Musandam-Oman Sail though understood there was a lot of work to be done to protect their position until the finish line.

“I feel very happy and hope we can stay in the lead right to the end,” said Al Busaidi.

“The whole team is working very hard to hold our position – I think we are working together better than ever and we are seeing the results.

“It would mean so much to us if we could win this leg but we know there is not much wind ahead so we have to carry on working hard.”

MOD 70 – Musandam-Oman Sail was dressed up and paraded in Brest today as part of a series of exhibition races for the four (Race for Water did not sail) MOD70s that rounded off a dazzling opening event in the 2012 Multi One Design circuit.

Just three days after they completed the KRYS OCEAN RACE transatlantic race, the four trimarans regrouped on the start line of the 2012 Tonnerres de Brest City Race designed to showcase the magnificent boats in front of thousands of spectators at the international maritime festival.

There were no points on offer and for Musandam-Oman Sail skipper Sidney Gavignet (FRA), the three races were an opportunity to entertain guests from Oman and Dubai and give his young Omani crew, which included Khamis Al Anbouri, another chance to improve their skills.

“It was a very important and useful training exercise and although we finished last, I was really happy because I could see everyone had a much better idea of what it takes to make this boat go fast compared to a month ago,” Gavignet said.

The races took place in the harbour in the midst of around 1,000 old gaffers that were taking part in the four-yearly Brest Maritime Festival. Spectators had the best viewpoint from the Dutch Tall Ship Gulden Leeuw anchored in the middle of the race course.

“It was a spectacular juxtaposition of the old and the new,” explained Musandam-Oman Sail’s helmsman and trimmer Brian Thompson.

“We were careering along this afternoon at 38 knots in flat water and they were lucky if they reached eight knots so we had 100 years of maritime progress right in front of our eyes.”

For Khamis, the Brest races offered him a chance to get back on board after sitting out the KRYS OCEAN RACE. He gave up his place after suffering seasickness on the delivery from Lorient in France to Newport in Rhode Island, US. MORE STORY

Musandam-Oman Sail Celebrates Historic end to Transatlantic Race

KRYS OCEAN RACE – Musandam-Oman Sail crossed the finish line of the KRYS OCEAN RACE at the heart of the Tonnerres de Brest at 00:05:38 CET on Friday 13 July, having completed their first transatlantic race in a remarkable 5 days 7 hours 5 minutes and 38 seconds despite sustaining damage in the first 36 hours.

They actually covered a total of 3,341nm at an average speed of 26.28 knots and finished as the fourth Multi One Design 70 trimaran in the inaugural event of the Multi One Design Circuit, 9 hours 57 minutes and 1 second behind race winners Spindrift.

Sidney Gavignet’s arrival in Brest also marked a major milestone in the lives and careers of Fahad Al Hasni and Mohsin Al Busaidi who became the first Omanis to complete a transatlantic race on board an Omani boat.

Their contribution has been immense, said skipper Gavignet and despite limited experience, their progress over the five express race days, deeply impressive.

“Since they left Lorient, the difference in Fahad and Mohsin has been huge in terms of attitude, work rate, knowledge of manoeuvres and what we should be doing next,” said Gavignet.

“They have contributed hard work and good humour to our team. They have become excellent seamen and superb mariners. It’s been fantastic having them on board.”

Musandam-Oman Sail’s race had started promisingly when they crossed the New York start line on Saturday July 7 and for the first 24 hours, were at the front of the fleet. But just before midnight the following day, the boat slowed and they realised there was a problem with their port foil.

It had failed and as a result, the boats performance fell to around 70% capacity though favourable conditions offset the effects of the damage since they were able to race on starboard tack for the majority of the race without any need to gybe until the closing stages.

Even without the go faster foil, Musandam-Oman Sail was still able to maintain breakneck speeds of 30 knots, helped by the ideal conditions that prevailed throughout most of the race, and reached a maximum speed of 39 knots. But three other boats were faster for longer, a fact that was reflected in the final results.

“Everyone has been surprised by the performance of the boats,” Gavignet added.

“We all knew they had potential but none of us quite knew how much. I feel sure we would have finished with the other boats had the foil not failed but we have more than met our objectives for the race so we are very happy.”

Fahad Al Hasni said he was looking forward to spending one hour in the shower and two days sleeping.

“We are feeling so good – I am proud of my team because we did a very good job right from the start of the race. This has been a very important project for Oman Sail and I’m so proud to be involved. It is the first time that Mohsin, myself and the team have done this race and we feel we have been a small part in making a piece of Omani history.”
