RACE NEWS  - A superb performance by Team AISM throughout the 15 days and 760 nautical miles of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour has seen the Dubai based crew sail to victory in convincing fashion in the third edition of the region’s only long distance offshore race ahead of BAE Systems (2nd) and EFG Bank (Monaco)(3rd).

Nine world-class crews including a host of elite sailors from the Middle East completed the unique sailing challenge and showcase endurance race around the coastline of four different countries, covering seven legs between Bahrain and Muscat.

The culmination of three year’s development of offshore racing in the region, this season delivered on its promise of being the most competitive and successful yet involving some of the world’s and region’s most accomplished sailors all competing in the ideal sailing conditions of the Arabian Gulf.

David Graham, CEO of Oman Sail, organiser of the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour commented of this year’s event: “It has been amazing. The level of competition has gone up as has the overall standard of the event. I’m particularly pleased with the girl’s boat and that they have four Omani sailors on board and have shown moments of brilliance. We have had some really interesting conversations in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar, so I’m looking forwards to seeing who will be on the start line next year. And the media-side has gone amazingly well.”

Graham believes that SATT next year will reach critical mass with more Gulf countries entered, 12-15 fully funded boats and a title sponsor.

“I am also particularly pleased that an Omani vision for the region, designed and managed this event, and we were able to get a prestigious international bank to put their confident in them and this race. By every possible measure this year’s EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour has been an outstanding success and significant strides have been made towards our vision of encouraging the growth of sailing across the region and reigniting the rich maritime heritage of the Gulf. Today we congratulate all the teams. Tomorrow we start working towards next year. That is the legacy of this truly unique spectacle” concluded Graham.

Today brisk downwind conditions, took the full fleet of nine Farr 30s home to The Wave, Muscat providing the perfect conclusion to this year’s EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour. The fleet leaving Mussanah Marina at dawn this morning was up to its full strength with the return of Adil Khaled and his Team Abu Dhabi, following their grounding and helicopter rescue on leg two.

A fitting end to the event was that honours on the leg should go to French America’s Cup helmsman Bertrand Pacé and the crew of AISM who have constantly dominated EFG Bank Sailing Arabia The Tour 2013. Over the last two and a half weeks they have won five of the seven offshore legs and set the tone for the in-ports when they claimed three out of three races in Doha. AISM won 2013 EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour by 10.25 points.

“We enjoyed this year’s event a lot,” said Pacé. “We have a good crew – everyone was very focussed on winning this race. It is much easier when the guys are working like that because we have good speed, good navigation and tactics. This tour was much easier than the previous years because there was less night sailing and more downwind. Conditions were similar to the Mediterranean this year with the thermal effect. But still it is two weeks of racing, so it is still hard.”

The pressure was fully on Cédric Pouligny and the crew of BAE Systems, going into this final leg just 0.5 points ahead of a hungry Sidney Gavignet and EFG Bank (Monaco) and with Bernard Pacé always one to aggressively defend his overall lead. In fact Pacé’s dirty work was done for him by Gavignet who attempted to luff BAE Systems off the course. However he never quite succeeded. In the end BAE Systems nosed ahead and although the two boats finished the leg in lowly seventh and eighth positions respectively, this was enough for them to take second and third places overall.

“We had more to lose than to gain, so basically it was a bit of a match race,” said Pouligny. “We had a very good start and were first at the upwind mark and then Bertrand Pace managed to pass us, but he was not really important. Sidney gained on us and was trying to make us go higher until we got separated from the fleet. We were in a difficult position, but we managed to have good speed and stay low.”

The EFG Bank (Monaco) skipper had a few regrets about how the leg had panned out: “We had a good race, but we should have gone and got them before the start line,” said Gavignet. “But it was a nice race, a nice fight with everyone.”

After knocking on the door of the podium throughout EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, Mohsin al Busaidi and his Renaissance team finally came good on this leg taking third place behind Messe Frankfurt.

Attending the final prize giving at The Wave, Muscat this afternoon was event sponsor George Catsiapis, Managing Director of EFG Bank (Monaco), who has been following the event closely: “It was a stressful race with boats going aground – Abu Dhabi was the first victim and in a way they were the winners of the race because they showed the morale to come back and finish off the race. But it is the mixture of top international skippers and GCC sailors that is fantastic.”

Starlets of the show, regardless of where in the GCC they visited, have been Dee Caffari’s all-female crew on Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat.

Caffari, the first woman to have sailed singlehanded around the world non-stop in both directions, said today’s leg was a fine conclusion to SATT, even though they just missed the podium: “We had great wind and good conditions and really close racing. It was intense and a really good way to finish a great event. This was our chance to get on the podium and we missed it by just two gybes. On the finish line all the girls all burst into tears – I was quite emotional for them, but it shows just how much they wanted it – we wouldn’t have got that reaction two weeks ago.”

Almost speechless with disappointment, hiding behind her sunglasses, was Al-Thuraya’s Intisar Al-Tobi. “I am sad, because we were so close and we did our best and we tried SO hard to finish in the top three places,” she said.

Taking in four countries and eight ports of call, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour is a showcase of everything that the Gulf has to offer in terms of state-of-the-art facilities and idyllic sailing conditions

Leaving Manama on February 10th, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour calls at Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Dibba and Mussanah and ends February 25th in Muscat.

RACE NEWS – AISM Lead overall, BAE Systems second and EFG Bank (Monaco) third as the final day beckons. Fleet leaves Mussanah tomorrow for the finish line in Muscat

Dutch Student Team Delft Challenge -TU Delft pulled off a stunning victory in today’s leg of the Gulf region’s only long distance offshore sailing race, finishing over an hour ahead of the nearest rival.  The leg, which takes in some of the scenic backdrops on the Tour, should have been plain sailing for the leading three teams.

Issa Al Ismaili, Events Director of race organizer Oman Sail, however, knows that upsets are all part of the thrill of sailing: “It’s a sign of how wide open sailing can be as a sport – our mission is to show everyone in the region that sailing is an accessible sport, and there could be no greater vindication of that ideal than a win from one of our youngest teams.  It’s a thrill to see Team Delft Challenge excel here on one of the final legs of the tour, in idyllic sailing conditions.”

All the boats competing in EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour are Farr 30 one designs, identical boats of identical speed and under normal circumstances in an offshore leg the boats are separated by minutes, if not seconds. However on the sixth leg of the event from Zighy Bay to Mussanah Marina, the leading boat, TU Delft, arrived one hour and 12 minutes ahead of her rivals.

After taking the risky tactics of splitting from the rest of the fleet and heading inshore in the early hours of this morning, the Dutch student team led by Kay Heemskerk had extended away at one point by more than 10 miles – impressive on a leg that ended up being less than 60 miles from start to finish, after it was shortened.

The result leaves TU Delft solidly in fourth place overall, while Bertrand Pace’s team on AISM continues to lead albeit with only a 4.25 point advantage over second-placed BAE Systems going into tomorrow’s final sprint leg of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, from Mussanah Marina back to The Wave, Muscat.

But the real fight will be on for second place between the Sidney Gavignet on EFG Bank (Monaco) and the Cedric Pouligny-skippered BAE Systems, now just 0.5 points ahead of Gavignet’s team.

The winner of this duel will get second place overall.

On a day trip to Oman to experience the event his bank sponsors, Keith Gapp, Head of Strategic Marketing and Communications at EFG Bank, saw the boats arrive in Mussanah Marina.

“So far we’re very happy,” Gapp commented. “We are active across quite a broad front in sailing in the Americas, Europe and Asia, so this fills geographically a missing piece of the jigsaw and it touches quite a few points in the region which I think is useful in terms of making it distinctive for us from a marketing stand point.”

Fahad, Al Hasni on board of EFG Bank (Monaco) commented:

“We are excited to be here and to see all the fans here and to be home. It certainly helped us sailing back into home waters. Tomorrow it will be the last race and if we finish ahead of them [BAE Systems] we will be second. “

With just one leg to go, the crews are all resting well tonight, the top three on their guard to ensure that another upset can’t happen before the fleet reaches The Wave Muscat, the state of the art marina that is the final destination of this flagship sailing event for the Gulf region.  Whatever the outcome tomorrow, however, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour has highlighted the great potential and ideal sailing on offer in the Gulf, and with ever increasing participation from local people in the sport, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour counts as a win for sailing and a win for all of the countries on the route from Manama to Muscat.

THE TOUR REACHES DUBAI

RACE NEWS - Setting off from Abu Dhabi Sailing and Yacht Club at sunrise and arriving at Dubai as the sun set over the city, yesterday’s leg of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia The Tour, the Gulf region’s only long distance offshore sailing race was as spectacular for its scenery as it was for the quality of the racing.

Having held the lead in the race since the first leg from Manama to Doha, team BAE Systems under the command of skipper Cédric Pouligny was finally caught up by the relentless professional crew of America’s Cup skipper Bertrand Pacé and Dubai based Team AISM.  Leading almost from the start of the leg, AISM kept their cool under the blazing February sunshine and held off all challengers in the light breeze all the way to Dubai. Having been just a quarter point behind BAE Systems after the in-port racing in Abu Dhabi, their win gives them a slender lead of three quarters of a point as they head off for Ras Al Khaimah this morning.

Bertrand Pacé’s AISM crew proved that they can not only perform inshore, but offshore as well when they won today’s third offshore leg of the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, the GCC’s longest yacht race.

It was an early start for the crews, but they were treated to seeing dawn break over Abu Dhabi’s magnificent skyline before getting underway in initially light conditions on the 78 mile leg, northeast up the United Arab Emirates coast from Abu Dhabi to Dubai.

Once again sneaking their way into the lead were the three usual suspects – AISM, the Cedric Pouligny-steered BAE Systems and Sidney Gavignet’s crew on EFG Bank (Monaco). Over the course of the day as the wind built to just over 10 knots, EFG Bank (Monaco) pulled into the lead when team BAE Systems and EFG Bank (Monaco) became involved in their own personal match race. Team BAE Systems also got ahead of the trio for around an hour, but it was once again AISM, winner of the last offshore leg and the last two days of inshore racing that proved the class act, taking line honours into Dubai yesterday at 17:36:17 local time, just four minutes ahead of BAE Systems, with EFG Bank (Monaco) a further 7 minutes behind.

As the boats lined up downwind, during the day the wind was veering and Pacé said their key move was getting on the inside of this shift during the criticial gybes. “I am also quite happy with our speed downwind. We were probably quicker than anyone else. We have prepared well and we try not to be too heavy.”

As a result of their victory, AISM has finally pulled into the lead overall ahead of BAE Systems, albeit only by 0.75 points.

“It was a lot of fun – a lot of strategy and positioning and also boat speed, as usual, “ said BAE Systems skipper Cédric Pouligny of yesterday’s race. “You had to play some gybes and take some options, it was full VMG sailing, so more of a game, more fun.”

AISM got ahead of them, according to Pouligny, because of a small communication failure on their part. “We let him go on our right, we didn’t react quickly enough and then it was a fight and he overtook us and when we gybed he was ahead of us.”

Skipper of EFG Bank (Monaco), Sidney Gavignet, was once again pleased that his team was on the podium again, but less happy about their being in third place. “It is annoying to be at the back of the top three, but I think it is clearly going to be between the three boats. That is why finishing third is not bad, but not so good…”

Gavignet praised his Omani crew. “Fahad Al Hasni is doing very well on the trim. On the first leg he gave us some very good tips because we did the Tour de France a la Voile before, about moving the crew weight forward and aft. But neither he nor Yasser Al Rahbi liked the early start this morning!”

Dee Caffari’s team on Al -Thuraya Bank Muscat was holding fourth place for most of the race but got pipped at the post by the capable Dutch student team on Team Delft Challenge – Tu Delft.

“It was a brilliant race,” said Caffari. “It was really close racing all the way with Team Delft Challenge – Tu Delft. We were just ahead of them at the final gate but we had to let them through on the inside. Then we were bow to transom – we did a dummy gybe and they fell for it and then it was a gybing duel to the finish and they had the windier side of the course. But it certainly focussed everyone’s attention! We had good boat speed and good manoeuvres today.“

After an overnight pitstop, the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour continues on up the UAE coast today with the short 53 mile leg from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah due to start at 10am.  With a forecast that includes rising winds under an overcast sky, the racing looks to be faster than yesterday’s leg, and AISM will be looking to use their experience and the momentum of their win to extend their lead.  EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour will reach Ras Al Khaimah around 8pm tonight, where the crews will rest overnight before taking part in in-port racing on Tuesday morning.

Set up to inspire the young people of the GCC to get involved in sailing, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour is now in its third year.  Setting off from Manama Feb 10th, the tour called at Doha and Abu Dhabi, reaching Dubai yesterday.  The race will also call at Dibba and Mussanah in Oman before reaching Muscat on Feb 25th.

ACTION PACKED SECOND LEG TO ABU DHABI

RACE NEWS – EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour overall standings: Team BAE Systems 1st, Team AISM 2nd, EFG Bank (Monaco) 3rd – Crews rest ahead of Abu Dhabi In-Port Racing Saturday 16th February.

Dubai-based Team AISM has claimed the second leg of the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour following 18 hours of maximum exhilaration for the nine international and regional crews competing between Doha and Abu Dhabi.

At 159 miles, this leg from the Qatari capital, Doha was the longest of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, the region’s only long distance offshore race. It was sailed in 20 knot northerlies and for the crews competing aboard their one design 30ft yachts, it proved to be drama-laden with their boats pushed to the limit, resulting in numerous broaches in the brisk conditions and an incident for the Abu Dhabi team who were airlifted after running aground.

Yet for the leaders that arrived into Abu Dhabi in swift succession just before dawn this morning it was smiles all round.

At the front of the fleet a cut throat competition was going on between the three world-class heavyweights – the Bertrand Pacé-steered and Dubai-based AISM, Sidney Gavignet’s team on EFG Bank (Monaco) and Cédric Pouligny on team BAE Systems. Gavignet’s team lost the lead when their yacht suffered problems with their electronics to be overtaken by Tuesday’s triple in-port race winner, AISM. Into Abu Dhabi Team AISM continued her winning streak, with Team BAE Systems second and EFG Bank (Monaco) dropping to third.

“It was amazing,” enthused Bertrand Pacé, “because we kept changing spinnakers, but actually the boat speeds were very close. We had a big fight with EFG Bank (Monaco). Many things happened – we caught some seaweed and there were many islands on the course and you had to decide to which side to pass them. And it was fun because we were very quick for a small boat – we hit 17 knots a couple of times.”

Cédric Pouligny also looked exhausted on his arrival having had no sleep and barely anything to eat since setting off from Doha yesterday lunchtime. The Frenchman agreed with Pacé that one of the crucial decisions early on was which side of an island they should pass and he admitted that their decision regarding this turned out to be the wrong one.

Team BAE Systems, leader going into this leg continues to hold first place but has second-placed AISM closing on them, on 6.75 points to Team BAE Systems’ 5.5. “It was a good leg, but Bertrand is going to be hard to beat. He has a 100% pro crew and they don’t mistakes,” Pouligny warned.

Volvo Ocean Race veteran Sidney Gavignet was putting a brave face on EFG Bank (Monaco) losing first place and, aside from the issue with their electrics, admitted he made a few errors due to his continued unfamiliarity with the Farr 30. However he was pleased with his team’s performance, leading for much of the leg, particularly after they had been over early at the start and had had to go back and recross the line.

The course itself was also taxing on the navigators who had to remain constantly on high alert with exclusion zones around oil fields on either side of the race track and several other obstructions to avoid en route.

The first boats to suffer were Team Renaissance and Team Delft Challenge, who, racing alongside each other, both ran aground, but were able to extract themselves and continue racing.

The Team Delft Challenge – TU Delft skipper, Kay Heemskerk, who was ready to drop from exhaustion upon his arrival at the Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club, said that they had dived on their keel to see if there was any serious damage – there wasn’t and he was satisfied they could continue. As a result they came home fourth, just ahead of their student rivals, the University of Plymouth team aboard Messe Frankfurt.  “I am proud of the guys,” said Heemskerk of his team mates.

The fledgling crew sailing with Adil Khaled on Team Abu Dhabi was not so fortunate, they were sailing a course to the south of their opposition yesterday evening when rudder damage caused them to run aground to the north of Halat Tinah island, some 73 miles from the finish. They were unable to get their boat off and because of the depth, the race committee boat that shadows the fleet, could not assist them, so given the weather conditions, the UAE coastguard was asked to assist. Some five hours after the incident the crew was successfully transferred to their life raft from where they were airlifted to safety.

“It was a difficult leg, with a number of challenges and tricky conditions. When I knew I had no control of the rudder I directed the team to go below deck to ensure their safety and we waited for the helicopter to airlift us off. I’m just happy the crew is safe and there were no injuries,” said Adil Khaled once back ashore.

“We are a young team and our goal before we started was to win a leg or an in port race and we hope that goal is still achievable. We are in talks on recovering the boat and hope to continue the tour and achieve our goal.”

Speaking after a dramatic night of sailing Issa Al Ismaili, Director of Events for Oman Sail said:

“EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour was established to give the best sailing talent in the GCC and from around the world an intense challenge. And this notorious leg to Abu Dhabi has proved once again what a stern test the tour is for all. But it’s only through such experiences can our local crews push themselves to the limits. The Omani female crew onboard Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat, and sailors such as Fahad Al Hasni of EFG Bank (Monaco) and Ali Al Balushi of Team BAE Systems are continuing to develop new skills and build further competitive experience. That is just one of the legacies of the tour and I’ve no doubt the in-port series in Abu Dhabi is going to be just as exciting.”

With the boats having completed this second offshore leg of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour in record time, their crews will have the rest of today and tomorrow off, before racing resumes with more in-port racing on Saturday at 11am, just off the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

In the first short course stage held in Doha a three race series was dominated by leg 2 winner, Team AISM. In strong breeze, Team AISM delivered a masterclass in tactical sailing and teamwork so all is to play for at the top of the standings as the leading crews enter the Abu Dhabi series.

Competing aboard identical Farr 30 yachts, the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour has attracted nine crews representing five different nations, led locally by Oman’s Team Renaissance, Royal Navy of Oman, Team BAE Systems and the all – female Team Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat. Two teams will compete on behalf of the UAE, Team Abu Dhabi and Team AISM. International crews include EFG Bank (Monaco), Team Delft Challenge – TU Delft (Holland) and the Team Messe Frankfurt (EU).

The racing will include in-port racing at selected locations.

SPRINT FINISH TO QATAR

RACE NEWS – The first leg of the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour was completed in glorious sunshine today with crews fighting out a sprint finish due to light winds off the coast of Qatar and throughout the 100 mile first leg from Bahrain.

Leading home the world-class crews by a distance of 250m to establish an early lead in the region’s only long distance offshore sailing race, covering 760 miles in 15 day race between Bahrain and Muscat, was Team BAE Systems (Oman), skippered by world-renowned Cedric Pouligny.

Completing the top three positions, with only a boat length between them was EFG Bank (Monaco) skippered by Sidney Gavignet in second and the youthful Team Messe Frankfurt led by Marcel Herrera in third.

Inspired by organisers Oman Sail to encourage one of the region’s fastest growing sports and reignite the rich maritime heritage of the Gulf, the third edition of the showcase sailing event got off to a slow start as Issa Al Ismaili, Director of Events at the race’s organiser Oman Sail said:

“Firstly congratulations to Team BAE Systems and skipper Cedric Pouligny who made the best of the conditions and his experience of having completed Sailing Arabia – The Tour in the two previous editions. Today we’re just pleased to get in some racing at all. Obviously to have no wind is not ideal but at least the teams will be fresh for tomorrow’s in-port sailing off Qatar. It was a sprint finish in the end but everyone knows this is only the start and there is a lot of competitive sailing and miles to race over the next 14 days.”

Speaking having secured finished first after the opening leg in 4 hours 49 minutes and 12 seconds, Cedric Pouligny, BAE Systems skipper said;

“After waiting all night with so little wind it was tight out there and felt more like an inshore race by the time we got started. There was a little positioning but it was mostly straight-line sailing. We won after getting a good start and it’s always a pleasure to win the opening leg. Tomorrow is a new day and the in-port sailing so close to the harbour on Qatar’s National Sport Day should be fun.”

In contrast to last year’s EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, when competitors at the start were buffeted by 30 knot winds, this year’s race departed Bahrain during a beautiful afternoon yesterday, but unfortunately without a breath of wind, severely restricting racing.

Keith Gapp, EFG Bank, Head of Strategy and Marketing, EFG International said on the 2nd placed position of EFG Bank (Monaco);

“Sidney Gavignet and EFG Bank (Monaco) are well placed to take control of this year’s EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour.  There is everything to play for over the next legs and we are supporting Sidney and his Omani team all the way to a podium finish.”

Race Director of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, Gilles Chiorri, explained sport sailing is 100% reliant on the co-operation of nature. “It is sailing and in this sport you have to deal with weather conditions – whether it is good or bad. It seems that the weather forecast for the coming days will be slightly better, so we’re looking forward to the next two weeks of race action”

Over the course of yesterday afternoon and through the night the nine crews, taking part in the region’s only long distance offshore sailing race, were forced to use their engines to motor down the course and spent most of the early hours of the morning waiting for the wind to materialise by the ‘Fairway’ mark, just off the northeast coast of Qatar.

At just after 0800 this morning, the breeze began to fill in and the Oman Sail Race Committee was able to set a 46 miles course towards Doha, south down Qatar’s east coast.

In the early part of the shortened race pre-race favourites, Bertrand Pacé skipper of Team AISM, the 2011 winner and former America’s Cup helmsman, got off to the best start but as the boats continued down the race course it was Pacé’s French compatriot Cedric Pouligny on Team BAE Systems who had just pulled into the lead and maintained that lead until the finish in Qatar, ahead of French compatriot Sidney Gavignet’s team on EFG Bank (Monaco).

British record breaking singlehanded round the world sailor Dee Caffari, who is skippering the all-female crew of Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat, comprising of 50% Omani sailors said:

“It’s painful, but we’ve had a good sail at the end. The race director did well getting a race in. It was sheet glass the whole way and we waited four hours hanging around for daylight to see if we would race in a sea of glass. But eventually the wind came.”

Despite the slow start for teams arriving into Qatar, racing is perfectly scheduled tomorrow to let all communities in Qatar and sailing enthusiasts celebrate the sporting public holiday on Tuesday 12th February. Free to attend and open to all, the family day let’s all spectators watch the magnificent fleet of Farr30 boats in action as they battle it out in Qatari waters to secure top points in the in-port racing series following the first leg of sailing between Bahrain and Qatar.

Initiated and supported by the Qatar Olympic Committee, National Sports Day includes a host of sporting events from gymnastics and athletics to football and karate, and is designed to inspire a new generation of active sports fans, unite the community and discover local talent.

This season promises to be the best yet, with some of the world’s best sailors competing in the ideal sailing conditions of the Gulf. EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour 2013 represents the culmination of three years’ development in offshore racing in the region, and the roster of competitors reflects the adoption and recognition of this unique event by the international sailing community.

Competing aboard identical Farr 30 yachts, the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour has attracted nine crews representing five different nations, led locally by Oman’s Team Renaissance, Royal Navy of Oman, Team BAE Systems and the all – female Team Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat. Two teams will compete on behalf of the UAE, Team Abu Dhabi and Team AISM representing the neighbouring Emirate of Dubai. International crews include EFG Bank (Monaco), Team Delft Challenge – TU Delft (Holland) and the Team Messe Frankfurt (EU).

Qatar is the first of seven that will see the fleet visit stopover ports first in Qatar, then along the UAE coastline to Abu Dhabi, Dubai (new to the course this year) and Ras Al Khaimah before passing through the Strait of Hormuz and on to Oman, visiting Dibba, Mussanah and the finish in Muscat.

The racing will include in-port racing at selected locations.

RACE NEWS  - EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, the region’s only long distance offshore sailing race started today with nine world-class crews including a host of elite sailors from the Middle East taking on the unique sailing challenge and endurance race between Bahrain and Muscat.

Inspired by organisers Oman Sail to encourage one of the region’s fastest growing sports and reignite the rich maritime heritage of the Gulf, the third edition of the showcase sailing event was officially launched at Amwaj Marina ahead of 15 days fierce competition around the coastline of four different countries covering 760 nautical miles.

The opening ceremony, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and the President of Bahrain Olympic Committee, was attended by Sailing Federation dignitaries from GCC nations, race officials, sponsors, skippers and crew of the boats competing for the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour 2013 trophy.

Khalifa Abdulla Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain Maritime Sports Association said: “Bahrain is extremely proud to host the opening ceremony and first leg of the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour. Thanks to the inspiring vision of Oman Sail a world-class event has been established that unites the region through sailing while also promoting the sport to a new generation. As the crews set sail for Qatar on the first leg we wish all involved a thrilling race from start to finish.”

The growing stature of the event and its adoption by the international sailing community is reflected in the diverse range of teams entered from around the world this year with crews hailing from Monaco, Holland and the EU.

Speaking ahead of the first leg Issa Al Ismaili, Director of Events at the race’s organiser Oman Sail said; “The vision of Oman Sail is to develop the region sailing talent and reignite the rich maritime heritage. Through EFG Bank Sailing Arabia The Tour, Oman Sail is also providing and exciting platform to develop people and leave a lasting legacy.”

“The tour is bringing together the best sailing talent in the GCC and from elite sailors around the world and we believe that every leg of the race will encourage sailing across the GCC by showcasing local role models and motivating youngsters to try something new,” added Ismaili.

The 100 mile leg to Qatar is the first of seven that will see the fleet visit stopover ports first in Qatar, then along the UAE coastline to Abu Dhabi, Dubai (new to the course this year) and Ras Al Khaimah before passing through the Strait of Hormuz and on to Oman, visiting Dibba, Mussanah and the finish in Muscat.

Amongst the favourites is Dubai-based Team AISM, skippered by Bertrand Pacé. Aside from winning the 2011 event, Pacé is a former America’s Cup helmsman and, relevant to this event, has won the Tour de France a la Voile eight times in its 35 year history. However with a similar pedigree is Cedric Pouligny, skipper of Team BAE Systems, which has finished third in the past two races.

New to EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour is Oman Sail’s MOD70 skipper Sidney Gavignet, on this occasion helming EFG Bank (Monaco). Gavignet’s crew includes British round the world veteran Neal McDonald and Oman’s Fahad Al Hasni.

British yachtswoman Dee Caffari, the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world singlehanded both eastabout and westabout, is returning as skipper of Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat, once again sailed exclusively by women. Caffari is joined by American round the world sailor Katie Pettibone, but also a squad of six up and coming Omani female sailors, four of whom will be on board at any one time. Because the girls are smaller, they will race with eight, while the boys teams will be sailed by six or seven crew.

This year Caffari says they have had more training time. “We did the Muscat Regatta and the Muscat–Kashab offshore race in November. We won the inshore regatta and came second in the offshore regatta. Caffari sailed two more weeks with the team in January but stresses that as they are part of Oman Sail’s keelboat training program and they sail regularly even when she isn’t there.

Racing in EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour is a unique experience, with the desert rolling into the sea for much of the course, punctuated by the metropolises the event visits en route, before the boats pass the rocky mountainous Omani coast around the Strait of Hormuz, exiting the Gulf in the Gulf of Oman. On the first leg the depth is rarely more than 4m, weather forecasts are typically unreliable and off Qatar and the UAE there are numerous oil fields to negotiate. “There’s never a dull moment,” says Caffari.

In addition to Bertrand Pacé’s team, UAE hopes are being placed on the Emirates most famous sailor Adil Khaled, who competed in the last Volvo Ocean Race aboard the Ian Walker-skippered Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing.

Khaled’s crew is a mix of sailors from Abu Dhabi and Dubai. “It is my first time with a fully Emirati crew. It is a great thing for my country and I am so proud, because it was my dream to have a full Emirati crew after the Volvo Ocean Race. We will try our best. I don’t know what will happen – we’ll see.”

Team Renaissance’s Omani skipper Mohsin Al Busaidi, was the first Arab to sail non-stop around the world and is competing in this event for a third time, the second time as skipper. His crew is mainly Omani new recruits alongside two French-speaking heavyweights sailmaker Bruno Dubois and navigator Thierry Douillard.

“Last year I finished seventh overall – not too bad for a new team,” says Al Busaidi. “We were on the podium three times and we finished the last leg second.” Typically Al Busaidi says the racing gets more competitive as the event progresses and hopefully they will be able to use their home waters advantage on the concluding two legs – however possibly not to the same degree as the Royal Navy of Oman team led by Qais Al Mamari.

International youth competition also comes to the race in the form of Team Messe Frankfurt, mainly British crew from the University of Plymouth, but with a German skipper in Marcel Herrera. They are joined by the Dutch team of Kay Heemskerk aboard Team Delft Challenge, previous competitors on the Tour de France a’ la Voice but making their competitive debut in the Middle East.

The racing will include in-port racing at selected locations.
