ALPARI TOUR FIRES UP

ALPARI MATCH RACING – The Tour this year comprises six events, starting with Match Race Germany from this Thursday until Monday, before moving to Korea, back to Europe with the Stena Match Cup Sweden in July, then Chicago Match Cup, the Argo Group Gold Cup in Bermuda, the season concluding in December with the Monsoon Cup, held in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.

For this, its 16th year, Match Race Germany is being held in Langenargen, located close to the Austrian border on Europe’s third largest lake, where the event sailed in Bavaria 40S.

As ever the Alpari World Match Racing Tour attracts the cream of the match racing world, all of whom are present in Langenargen ready for tomorrow’s practice sessions.

The line-up going to all the events – the Tour card holders – this year numbers eight rather than nine. Tour Director Craig Mitchell says the reduction is for reasons of simplicity. “It allows each event to have two qualifying invites and two wild cards. The last thing you want is a closed shop and it keeps the local interest up, which is vital.”

The 2013 Tour Card holders are reigning world champion Team GAC Pindar skipper Ian Williams and Swedes Johnie Berntsson (Stena Sailing Team) and Bjorn Hansen (Hansen Sailing Team), runner-up to Williams in 2012. From New Zealand are Phil Robertson, winner of Match Race Germany last year and Adam Minoprio, the 2009 ISAF Match Racing World Champion. France is represented by Pierre-Antoine Morvan and his Vannes Agglo Sailing Team while with the retirement of Peter Gilmour last year, Keith Swinton and his Black Swan Racing team are flying the flag for Australia. A highly anticipated new tour card holder this year is Taylor Canfield from the US Virgin, whose USone team impressively won the final two events last season.

One of the strongest contenders this year is likely to be Adam Minoprio, making his return to the Tour after taking two years off to compete with an Emirates Team New Zealand crew aboard Camper in the Volvo Ocean Race. After competing at the Bermuda Gold Cup and the Monsoon Cup last season the 27 year old has felt inspired to make his return this season and has been fortunate enough to get backing for from Alpari, his team now called Team Alpari FX.

“I am really excited,” said Minoprio. “I’m looking forward to this first event and getting back into the match racing this year. Last year I had a taste of it in Bermuda and at the Monsoon Cup and wanted to do some more this year. I am lucky to have Alpari help me get back on to the Tour.”

Minoprio has also managed to get the majority of his crew back including Tom Powrie, Dave Swete and Nick Blackman, with Chris Main join as trimmer, having last competed on the Tour a decade ago with GBR Challenge.

But Ian Williams and his Team GAC Pindar crew remain the benchmark. If Williams wins the Tour this year he will be only person in the 25 year history of the World Championship to have done so for a fifth time. Williams has the same crew as previous years, including Bill Hardesty and Mal Parker, but has lost Matt Cassidy and Gerry Mitchell for Match Race Germany, replaced by Willem van Waay and Graham Spence.

Both Minoprio and Williams have been attempting to fire up their campaigns prior to the Tour kicking off this week. Both had their full teams competing at the Congressional Cup in Long Beach in April where Williams came home third to Minoprio’s fifth.

“We’ve never won it before,” admits Williams of his record at Match Race Germany. “It is one of the few that we haven’t. In fact I think third is our best result there, so it is one we’d like to win at some point.”

Keith Swinton is back with his same crew as he’s had for the last couple of years, including trimmers Olof Lundgren (SWE) and Ted Hackney (AUS), pitman Jakob Gustafsson (SWE) and bowman Ricky McGarvie (AUS). Swinton’s north European home is Sweden, where he spent three years up until London 2012 coaching the Sweden women’s match racing team.

“Competition on the tour this year is going to be really tough – more difficult than last year,” says the skipper, who heralds from Perth, Western Austria. “There is one less tour card, which thickens the competition up and some of the wild cards are going to be strong,” he adds referring to Mathieu Richard.

As to Match Race Germany, Swinton says: “It is an interesting event. The boats are very big and quite slow. But it is the first Tour event of the season and we’ll take it as it comes. I’m sure we’ll improve during the week and if that happens, we’ll have the possibility of doing a really good result.”

Tomorrow crews get to practice before racing off Langenargen starts on Thursday.

NEW TOUR CARD HOLDER SELECTION PROCESS

MATCH RACING – London, UK – 14 January, 2013: Preparations for the 2013 Alpari World Match Racing Tour, which kicks off in May at Match Race Germany, are gathering apace with the selection process for the list of 2013 Tour Card Holders. The deadline for all applications is 24 February 2013 with the final list set to be unveiled in less than eight weeks.

The Tour Card Holders are the collective face of the global series and the final list provides the best indication of who the main contenders will be for the Tour title each season. This year the Tour has introduced a number of changes to the invite policy, including the decision to guarantee all eight Tour Card Holders invitations to all scheduled events prior to the Monson Cup, the final event of the series. In return, each Tour Card Holder has a commitment to attend a minimum of five Tour events.

Teams making bids will be notified whether they have been successful at the end of February. The Tour management bases its selection on a set criteria including: current or past Tour or ISAF ranking, recent achievements across other sailing disciplines, media awareness and PR plans, and the team’s logistical and financial commitment to the 2013 season.

Current World Champion Ian Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar, together with Björn Hansen (SWE) Mekonomen Sailing Team and Phil Robertson (NZL) WAKA Racing who finished 2nd and 3rdrespectively in 2012 are each guaranteed Tour Cards for 2013. A further 20 teams have expressed interested in contending for the remaining five places making this year the most tightly contested selection process.

As well as a combined prize purse across the series of USD$1.25million, the Tour will also award a Bonus Pool of USD$500,000 in 2013 which will be divided between the Tour Card Holders. The amount that each Card Holder receives depends on their final Tour standing.

Tour Director, Craig Mitchell, said: “We’ve worked hard to make the Tour one of the most appealing sailing series in the world to sailors. It’s their nature to want to compete against the best. Equally, we appreciate that the Tour Card Holders are our biggest asset and the rigorous selection process ensures the Tour features the best of the best in tight, closely fought match races at every event. That’s what sailing fans come to watch.”

The fact that eight teams could still mathematically win the ISAF Match Racing World Championship at the finale event, the Monsoon Cup, in 2012 is testimony to the selection process and demonstrates how evenly matched these athletes are at the top of match racing.

ALPARI ARRIVES IN MALAYSIA

MATCH RACING - Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia – 02 December, 2012: The Alpari World Match Racing Tour Trophy arrived in Malaysia today in front of a legion of sailing fans who have already started to arrive in Kuala Terengganu for the season finale, the Monsoon Cup. If any of the 12 competing teams undergoing final preparations on the water today still needed something to focus the mind, the arrival of the coveted trophy, was it.

The trophy, made by Garrard – the world’s oldest jewellers – was first awarded in 2011 to Ian Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar. No less than eight teams can still mathematically win it this week and each of them will have made their pre-event computations of the leader board. They know each race is a potential Championship game-changer.

Tomorrow will conclude all the pre-event ceremonial duties with racing due to get underway on Tuesday. Speaking about the pressure the teams will need to handle, AWMRT Tour Director, Craig Mitchell, said: “Every match is a battle in this sport but at the Monsoon Cup, things are ramped up to another level. You only have to look back over the last couple of year when Mathieu Richard and then Torvar Mirsky were eliminated in the qualifying stage, despite having expectations to challenge for the overall Tour title.

“It will be close. The likelihood is that we’ll have a big multiway tie after Qualifying and there will be a count back to determine some of the teams progressing to the Quarter Final. Once the teams manage to book their slot in the knockout rounds, it is a very different beast. All of the teams will leave the dock, aiming for that 6 point score line that should see them through to the knockout rounds, that’ll be the key focus.”

Referring to the battle for overall Tour victory, Mitchell continued: “Bjorn [Hansen] got his points on the board early this year and he’s never had a better chance to take his first title. Having said that, there isn’t such a breakaway group this season and all of the other guys, right down to Johnie Berntsson in eighth can win it mathematically if the stars align.

“For the fans that have followed the battle between the top two all season, the dream final would be Hansen vs. Williams and that would be an amazing match, with the highest possible stakes. Either way, the standard of sailing on show will be unparalleled here in Malaysia.”

Looking forward to the first Qualifying Session on Tuesday 4th December, Mitchell said: “I think the early story of the event will be the big casualties that don’t progress to the Quarter Final. There aren’t any weak teams.”

The Monsoon Cup, Malaysia’s second biggest sports event of the year, will take place on 3-8 December at the Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort & Spa, Pulau Duyong, Kuala Terengganu.

GILMORE BACK TO BUSINESS IN FRANCE

MATCH RACING – Strong offshore winds made for exciting sailing conditions on the first day of Qualifying at Match Race France, where Peter Gilmour got off to a flying start for the sixth stage of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT).

Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing sits on top of the standings in Marseille after five straight wins put his team on the brink of qualification to the knockout stages. Whilst he retained an unbeaten start to the competition, it was the elements that Gilmour felt were the toughest opposition.

He said: “We had a great day today and I think the boys did a really fabulous job. It’s a long day but we sailed well, getting the starts we wanted and keeping everything together. We discussed things this morning and decided it was going to be one of those days where you don’t really need to concentrate so much on the opposition. The key thing was always going to be keeping stable, alive and not capsize or losing by crew error. We just concentrated on keeping the boat upright.

“The J80’s certainly don’t suit me but when you’re sailing in 20 knots of breeze, you’re a hundred kilogrammes and you can get over the side to start swinging the boat down, it seems to work ok!”

Gilmour attributes his team’s good start to the decision to arrive in Marseille early in order to spend some extra time in the racing area. He said: “We came out here early and managed to get in two really good days of practice with Simone Ferrarese. I think that has become a huge advantage, getting comfortable in the boats and with these conditions so I’m really pleased we spent our time doing that. After the practice was cancelled yesterday, I think the extra time on the race area has really told.”

Ferrarese (ITA) Ferrarese Racing Team also started the day strongly with four opening wins and seemed to have a handle on the tricky conditions, powering the J80 boats to a 4-2 record by the end of the session. He said: “It’s our first time here at Match Race France but we’re confident after the grade 1 last week in Pornichet where we performed well and finished fourth.

“The racing conditions are tricky here with the strong winds but we’re enjoying it and look forward to getting back out on the water tomorrow.

“At the moment all we’re concentrating on is getting as many points as we can in qualifying here in Marseille. Honestly, we’re not thinking too far ahead of ourselves through to the knockout rounds. We’ve got off to a good start so we’ll try to continue that tomorrow.”

Laurie Jury (NZL) Kiwi Match was one of the skippers who also elected to get his team in shape for the event by competing at the Internationeaux de France de Match-Racing in Pornichet and the decision was justified as he recorded a 4-1 record in 20 knot shifting winds and taking key victories over current Tour leader Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Mekonomen Sailing Team and reigning Tour Champion, Ian Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar. Of his good start, Jury said: “We have begun strongly like we did in St. Moritz. We’re sailing the boat well and doing a good job of getting the boat around the track and not making too many mistakes. Our starts were average but the kite work down wind was good and overall we’re happy.

Referring to one of his fellow competitors and second place finisher in Pornichet, Pierre-Antoine Morvan (FRA) Vannes Agglo Sailing Team, Jury said: “We were frustrated in our match against Pierre-Antoine Morvan, a penalty put us behind. He just got second last week [in Pornichet] so I’m sure he’ll be one to watch out for at a home regatta but we felt confident against them today.

“We’re seventh in the Tour overall at the moment but with the close gap up to third, that’s a realistic target for us. If we can get a good result here, I’d feel pretty good about the Monsoon Cup.”

The teams will be back on the water from 1000AM local time (GMT+2) tomorrow for the second day of Qualifying at Match Race France (24 – 29 September) in Marseille, the sixth stage of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour.

Match Race France – Standings after Qualifying Session 1:
Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing 5-0
Laurie Jury (NZL) Kiwi Match 4-1
Simone Ferrarese (ITA) Ferrarese Racing Team 4-2
Pierre-Antoine Morvan (FRA) Vannes Agglo Sailing Team 4-2
Ian Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar 3-2
Keith Swinton (AUS) Black Swan Racing 3-3
Adam Minoprio (NZL) Argo Group Black Match 2-3
William Tiller (NZL) Full Metal Jacket Racing 2-3
Damien Iehl (FRA) Wind 2 Win 2-3
Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Mekonomen Sailing Team 2-4
Johnie Berntsson (SWE) Berntsson Sailing Team 1-4

ROBERTSON FINDS WINNING FORMULA

MATCH RACING – On a day when a lack of wind eventually stopped racing at the St. Moritz Match Race, Phil Robertson profited from a return to the form which has seen him climb to fourth in the Alpari Match Racing Tour leaderboard after four stages.

Robertson (NZL) WAKA Racing finished yesterday’s opening qualifying session with a disappointing three losses from three but showed no signs of repeating those results, beating Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing and current Tour leader Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Mekonomen Sailing Team before the wind became too light for sailing to continue.

Laurie Jury (NZL) Kiwi Match Sailing remains at the head of the qualifying table on five points, without having taken to the water on the second day of competition. Johnie Berntsson (SWE) Berntsson Sailing Team remains in second despite losing his unbeaten record to compatriot Bjorn Hansen (SWE) in his first match of the day. Berntsson, said: “We picked up a penalty in the pre-start against Bjorn but the outcome of that didn‘t affect the  overall race, i don’t think. It was very much about starting well and getting the left side.We didn‘t manage to close the gap and he was in a controlling position for most of the way around. He did a good job in keeping us behind.”

Berntsson went on to beat Jerome Clerc (SUI) Team CER to take his tally to 4 points but is hopeful that conditions will allow a full qualifying stage to be completed: “We’re pleased to be 4-1 which puts us in a good positionafter two days but we would prefer to be back out on the water completing Qualifying. We’re here as dedicated sailors and want to race as much as we can, perform well, and win because we are the best on the day.”

Despite the loss to Berntsson, Clerc still feels that his team are in with a chance of qualifying for the Quarter Finals, having earlier beat rival Eric Monnin (SUI) Okalys Corum in their national battle on home water. Clerc, said: “We were very happy to beat Eric because it’s our third time at this regatta in St. Moritz and we haven’t beaten him before. He had a better start than us and was in front from the start but we got a good shift which allowed us to overtake and hold on for the win.

“We’re from Geneva, which is 6 hours away so it doesn‘t feel like a home event for us here. There isn’t a lot of pressure on us because we aren’t really one of the favourites so we’re here to learn and improve our match racing.

“So far i think we’ve done well because we have a new crew member for this event and if we can continue taking each match as it comes, we have a chance for the Quarter Finals.”

The St. Moritz Match Race will take to the water for the third qualifying session tomorrow, starting from 1000AM CET.

RICHARD LOOKING FOR THIRD TITLE

MATCH RACING – Mathieu Richard will join the fifth stage of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour as a wildcard at the St. Moritz Match Race, an event that he has won two times previously. With Bjorn Hansen battling with Ian Williams for top spot on the overall Tour leaderboard, there is much at stake as the world’s top match racers begin their battle to become ‘King of the Mountain’ tomorrow.

Mathieu Richard (FRA) Loire Atlantique Sailing Team won the St. Moritz Match Race in 2008 as well as in the 2010 season, which ultimately saw him take a second place overall on the Tour behind Ben Ainslie (GBR). Richard recognises that he will need to get up to speed quickly to achieve his goal of a third title in Switzerland, saying:

“It is strange for us to come to this event without having had a lot of match racing competition. In previous years I’ve been a Tour Card Holder, so would be used to racing these guys on the circuit.”

“I’ve only competed at the French Match Racing Championship so far this year, winning a competitive event against other Tour-experienced skippers Pierre-Antoine Movan and Damien Iehl. It feels less pressurised for my team this year but we won’t know until tomorrow what sort of form we’re in.”

“I’m hoping that we are at a good level when we get on the water because it would be great to come back to the Tour at an event that we really enjoy and take the win. We finished second overall in the Tour in 2007 and in 2010 so i think we have the ability to challenge these guys.”

Ian Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar will renew his battle with Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Mekonomen Sailing Team, the pair having become early favourites in the race for the 2012 Tour title. Williams, said: “This is my eigth time at the St. Moritz Match Race and i’ve managed the podium five times so it is an event I really enjoy both on and off of the water.

“The main goal has to be to beat Bjorn [Hansen] at this event and reach the podium ourselves. Having said that, I’d love to take a victory as I’ve not won in St. Moritz since 2007. We have the same team as last year so that consistency should be a real benefit out on the water.

“There is a lot of new blood on the Tour  this year and I’ve sailed with all of these guys apart from Josh Junior. It’s great for the sport that these young skippers are coming through and are able to compete at the top level.”

Bjorn Hansen also arrives in Switzerland for what will be his fifth event on Lake St. Moritz and in the form of his life, currently sitting second in the ISAF Match Racing World Rankings. He said: “We like the conditions in St. Moritz and we’re hoping for some tough weather, which would suit the environment we are used to in Sweden.

“We’ve sailed well every  year at the St. Moritz Match Race except one. There aren’t any specific objectives and expectations so we will just concentrate on going as far as we can in the event.

“I’ve never come to the event ranked so high but past results dont count for anything at the start of a regatta. It’s impossible for us to controll Ian Willams throughout the event so the focus is just on sailing as well as we can and we’ll see what result we come out with on Sunday.”

Williams Wins in Chicago

MATCH RACING -  Reigning Tour Champion Ian Williams was today crowned the 2012 Chicago Match Cup winner after a 3-0 battle against Australian youngster Jordan Reece, which also closed the gap on Bjorn Hansen at the top of Alpari World Match Racing Tour leaderboard, the Swede having won the day’s Petit Final to take third.

Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar went into this inaugural US Tour event desperate for a win, having finished second and third at his previous series events so far this season. Starting strongly despite an enforced crew change due to appendicitis suffered by his tactician and mainsheet trimmer Bill Hardesty, Williams kept true to his tactician’s wishes sent from hospital: “Tell Ian nothing fancy! Keep it smooth and fast!”

Williams, said: “It wasn’t straightforward out there, the conditions were very difficult with the light air and missing Bill [Hardesty] after he’d done a fantastic job all week was a tough change to make. Garth Ellingham [WAKA Racing] is also great sailor and he did a great job in the Final but obviously it takes a while to gel as a group.”

“The first couple of races were pretty dicey and they could have gone either way but I felt that as we improved and the communication was there, we did a much better job of controlling the start and controlling the race.

Jordan Reece (AUS) – Estate Master Sailing Team did well to make the Finals, the 21-year old’s first-ever in the Tour, as he kept the pressure on the World Champion in every match of the Finals. The closest he got to victory was in wresting the lead away from Williams on the first run of the second match, rolling over his rival in the light choppy conditions to take the lead into the bottom gate.

But Williams got the favoured right side on the second beat and with just a little more pressure managed to pull ahead of the Australians in the final approach to the second top mark. Despite a rush to challenge to retake the lead as he had on the first run, Williams managed to just stay ahead into the finish to take the win. Reece, said: “Right now we’re a bit disappointed but in a few hours I think we’ll be happy with a second place finish at our second Tour event. We’re a young team and this is a good start, showing that we have the ability to go against these top teams. MORE STORY

Swinton Still hot in Chicago

MATCH RACING – Keith Swinton got off to a fantastic start on the first day of the Chicago Match Cup today, taking six wins with just one defeat at the fourth stage of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour, which runs 10 – 15 July.

Swinton (AUS) Black Swan Racing was a winner at the Chicago Grade 1 Match Race in 2011, prior to the venue joining the Tour for the first time in 2012. That success on Lake Michigan in the same TOM 28 boats, where he beat fellow competitor and Tour Card Holder Pierre-Antoine Morvan (FRA) Vannes Agglo Sailing Team, suggests that he is one of the skippers capable of victory in the sole US stage of the Tour.

Despite coming into the event with a slight illness, Swinton is upbeat about his chances:“We’re pretty comfortable in these boats so we’d have been a bit disappointed not to have a good day today.

“You almost don’t want to go straight through the first round of qualification as you don’t get that extra racing. It’s a long regatta so if you make sure you make it through, that’s what counts.”

Swinton’s mastery of the TOM 28’s in today’s light to moderate breeze shown in several close matches, with probably none closer than his one and only losing match with today’s runner-up and current Tour Leader Bjorn Hansen. In one of the most aggressive pre-starts of the day’s nine flights sailed just metres from the spectators gathered at the end of Navy Pier, Swinton got a little too aggressive, twice hitting the Swedes and thereby earning two penalties. With under a minute left to the start, Hansen erred by rotating past head to wind in a luff, getting a penalty for the move, which then left Swinton a little breathing room to get off the start with just one outstanding penalty. The young Aussie then controlled the remainder of the match with a narrow lead, but then just missed completing the penalty turn on the finish line to cede the match to the Swedes.

The twelve competing teams also feature a strong local entry, including Beijing Olympian Sally Barkow (USA) – Team 7 Match Race and North America’s number one match racer, 23 year-old Taylor Canfield (ISV) – Canfield Racing, who feels that he can use the event to show he has what it takes to compete at the top table of match racing on a regular basis, saying: “I have a great group of guys that I’m sailing with and I believe we have the ability to win this event. 4-1 today is a good start.

“The goal for next year is definitely compete in these World Championship events more regularly and to break into the world top 15 and pick up a Tour Card.”  MORE STORY

MATCH RACING – Phil Robertson went unbeaten in Qualifying Session 4 at STENA Match Cup Sweden to finish top and get the first pick of opposition in the Quarter Final of the event as he looks to continue his fantastic early season form through the Alpari World Match Racing Tour.

Robertson (NZ) WAKA Racing Team may have gone under the radar of some of his fellow skippers, having taken two of his three qualifying losses in the first day of sailing before winning seven from eight to secure the early advantage. A win in the final flight of the day saw him beat Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing in a match that was set to decide first position. Robertson, said: “When we started the Gilmour match, we didn’t realise on board that it could allow us to top qualifying.

“There was a 30 degree wind shift about two minutes out and the guys on board did a beautiful job to position ourselves to get there first and we got a massive lead in the light shifting winds so it was a hard match to stay ahead, especially with a big lead. He caught right up then as the match got closer it was a bit more comfortable for us as we were able to stay in the same area and do what we do best which is keep it close and keep ahead.

“Our crew are all really comfortable with each other and one of our big strengths is the wind and spotting the breeze. When it comes down to that, when it’s shifting like it was, I’d back our team any day and I have full confidence in them to tell me to go the right way so all I have to do is make sure the boat is going fast.

Gilmour remained relaxed about his final standing, saying: “The priority for this team is always to reach the latter stages of the knockout rounds ahead of topping qualification. Whilst it’s important for count-backs and the choosing of your next opponent, we put more importance on getting our team practiced as much as possible at this stage whilst ensuring we’re one of the eight that progress.” MORE STORY

Hansen Retains Korea Title

Alpari World Match Racing Tour - Gyeonggi, South Korea – 03 June, 2012: Defending Champion Bjorn Hansen (SWE) fought off stiff competition from reigning Tour title-holder Ian Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar from Mekonomen Sailing Team to win the Korea Match Cup, the second event of the 2012 .

Hansen began in commanding fashion and managed to establish a 2-0 lead early on, looking a clear favourite to retain his crown. The fight back by Williams then began in the third with Hansen being forced over the line before the gun and having to round the committee boat to start with a deficit which he wasn’t able to make up. Williams led from start to finish in the fourth, levelling the scores at 2-2 to set up a grandstand finish for the capacity crowd at Jeongok Harbour, Gyeonggi Province.

Williams may look back on the first match for one of the defining moments of the tie, as he was forced outside of the committee boat just before the start. By electing to try for the line anyway, he smashed into the committee boat and damaged his own bow, in the process earning an early penalty. The damage resulted in a replacement boat being needed for the remaining races.

The winner-takes-all fifth match started with split tacks off the line which Williams led, building a lead to almost 50 meters before rounding the top mark for the final time. After a shocking spinnaker hoist early on the final leg, there was a renewed sense of belief amongst Hansen’s Mekonomen Sailing Team that they might still have a chance of victory. Hansen split right (looking downwind) early and on coming back together, Williams was still ahead but the gap was closer. A slight increase in pressure on the left hand side of the course now favoured Hansen and as the pair approached the finish line from opposite sides, Hansen dramatically crossed the bow of the GAC Pindar boat, holding his lead through to the finish line to take the win.

Hansen, said: “In that last match, we were 4 lengths behind and saw an opportunity when he had problems with his spinnaker. We put in a fantastic jibe set to get over to the right, probably the best I’ve seen from the guys! MORE STORY

Robertson Wins Season Opener

MATCH RACING – Langenargen, Germany – 28 May, 2012: Phil Robertson’s WAKA Racing team has won Match Race Germany, the opening event on the 2012 Alpari World Match Racing Tour after taking victory against Laurie Jury in an all-Kiwi final in Langenargen.

In the end, a count-back decided both the final and petit final on Lake Constance. The event has had both the best and worst of sailing conditions throughout the week and unfortunately the wind failed to build for the final, forcing the Race Committee to end racing with no races completed in either the final or petit final.

Robertson (NZ) WAKA Racing came into Match Race Germany looking for match practice ahead of a busy season in which he hopes to make a significant impact on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour. This win will give him plenty of confidence after last year when he struggled to find consistent form in his first season as a Tour Card Holder.

A jubilant Robertson, said: “Today turned into a pretty relaxing one for us! It’s a shame there was no wind but we’re really happy to take this victory. It’s our first Tour win and we’ve learnt a lot from it. We’ll have to celebrate it on our long flight to Korea!”

Robertson’s WAKA Racing team and Laurie Jury’s Kiwi Match will now become two of the teams to watch in the ISAF Match Racing World Championship. Laurie Jury picked up 22 points for his runner-up spot here in the first event of his first full season on the Tour. A sole outing in 2011 came at the Argo Group Gold Cup in Bermuda and he couldn’t have hoped for a better start to this year’s series:

“We were looking forward to racing Phil and felt good about way we were sailing the boat but at the end, it was just taken out of our hands. We’ll take some confidence from the event and get straight back into it at the Korea Match Cup. We want to show that this wasn’t a fluke.”
