XS SAILING RESPECT – There are no words that will make Dean Barker and the New Zealand team feel better after the race of the century. When you are champions like Dean Barker and this team of sailors, there is no second place.
We can only hope that they will except the words of praise by the ORACLE team and all the fans of sailing around the world. They can be proud of what they accomplished in this ground breaking America’s Cup.
They were the first team to show all the other teams how to sail the AC72 to perfection. They made the complexities of sailing and flying this new breed of cat look easy. Their tactics and crew work made the other teams look always one step behind.
Other lesser champions would make excuses, but not Dean Barker and crew. They sailed and fought for every meter on the course. Even when mother nature dealt them with disappointment, they brushed it off and fought back hard.
They represented their country with the highest of honor, which gained the respect of their competitors, America and the world. The entire country of New Zealand can hold their heads up high and be proud of one of their best sailing teams in history. Their money was well spent as Team NZ not only came close to winning the Cup, but they won the hearts and respect of all Americans and the world.
So here is to Dean Barker and the crew of Team New Zealand. Thank you for racing your hearts out and taking sailing to a new level that will forever change the sport. We know you will hurt for a while, but like all great champions, you will shake it off and come back fighting when we see you back on the water in the next America’s Cup. Till then, mates…
