Ten years ago, Bouwe Bekking and his crew were involved in one of the biggest rescue operations in Volvo Ocean Race history. This was the 2005-06 edition of the race, and the first edition of a new class of boat – the Volvo Open 70.
The new boat was not without issues, with several boats failing to complete the first leg from Vigo to Cape Town. One of them was Bekking’s movistar, but it was the seventh leg from New York to Portsmouth when disaster fully struck the team.
This video shares how their dramatic story unfolded.
