Seabiscuit-DSC_0875N

RESCUE AT SEA – Lessons were learned about the rescue of crew aboard Seabiscut in the last Newport Bermuda Race. No one should underestimate the importance or demands of these incidents and the efforts to deal with them. As Royal Bermuda Yacht Cub Commodore Jonathan Brewin observed, “We were dealing with just one boat and one casualty.  If four or five boats were involved, we wouldn’t be able to handle all of it.  We need to have a team ready to work.”

The Newport Bermuda Race is closely followed by an onshore team of race officials who alternate four-hour watches as they monitor emails, satphone and radiotelephone calls, and the online tracker that identifies entries and their positions. At a little after 2000 EDT on the 2012 race’s third night, June 17, watch-stander Nicholas Weare, based in Bermuda, received an email from the race’s consulting physician in Massachusetts.

He promptly reported it to race officials: “Message received from Dr. Barbara Masser advising that she lost satphone contact 7:49 EDT while in communication with Seabiscuit regarding a 38-year-old insulin dependent male who has not eaten or drunk for 24 hours, with elevated blood sugar and appears confused.”

These were the first two of more than two dozen emails (not to mention many satphone and radio calls) sent over the next seven hours concerning the serious problem on board Seabiscuit, a J-46 in the race’s Double-Handed Division. The effort to assist and, eventually, evacuate the seasick sailor, Nathan C. Owen, included more than two dozen people, including race officials, rescue personnel in the U.S. and Bermuda, and the crews of two other racing boats and a cruise ship.

Following the incident there were frank discussions of lessons learned in a debriefing at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, in replies to a questionnaire circulated to 21 people involved in the incident, and in John Rousmaniere’s detailed incident report to the Bermuda Race Organizing Committee. Here is a summary

Seasickness and Dehydration:  Seasickness puts lives at risk.  Seasickness medication must be trialed by each member of the crew prior to going offshore, checking for side effects, and be used prophylactically wherever the boat is sailing.  All vessels must be equipped with proper seasickness and anti-nausea medication, including suppositories (for times when oral medication cannot be held down) and IV saline to provide emergency hydration

At least one crew member should be trained and assigned to monitor crew health and medications.  2012 Bermuda Race Chair John Osmond (a medical doctor) has recommended that sailors take a first- aid course/safety seminar addressing seasickness and dehydration.

Communications:

Crews must be thoroughly familiar with and practice on their satellite phones and radiotelephones. Satphone calls were lost and dropped because the phone or volume was turned off, or because service providers could handle only a limited number of voice calls at time. Voicemail and email are extremely valuable options for offshore satphones—but they work only if the crews frequently check for messages.

Emergency/crisis management:

The question “Who was in charge?” in the questionnaire elicited a large variety of answers.  Because some confusion is probably inevitable in such situations, a crisis management plan that looks sound on paper may not be suitable in action. Every plan should be tested in trial runs by its team and rescue officials.

Another crucial issue is having necessary data readily available. Telephone numbers and other contacts for boats, rescue services, and homes must be known and carefully recorded and stored where they are instantly accessible.

RECORD BREAKERS – Ocean-faring maxi trimaran known as Maxi Banque Populaire V has been acquired by Dona Bertarelli and is now gearing up to a new campaign, set to break records and create exceptional events. The trimaran will begin its new career within Dona Bertarelli’s and Yann Guichard‘s racing stable, Spindrift racing, at the Rolex Fastnet Race 2013, on August 11 this year.

p1404365852-2

Dona Bertarelli has shown her mettle on Lake Léman with her Ladycat catamaran by finishing last year’s season on the podium of the Vulcain Trophy 2012. She is also the only woman skipper to have won the Bol d’Or Mirabaud in 74 editions of the famous race. Dona is now setting herself the goal of breaking records on the biggest racing trimaran in the world.

“I am proud and happy to be able to sail on this legendary boat; it will be a great and difficult challenge to improve on the records already achieved by this trimaran,” Dona Bertarelli explains. “I have thus called upon the experience of my life partner, Yann Guichard, and on all the team of the Spindrift racing stable to manage this campaign successfully.”

Bertarelli is a passionate sailor and since 2007 has raced with her team Spindrift Racing in the monotype multihull regattas on the Lake Léman with her Décision 35 catamaran Ladycat. Bertarelli and her team won the Bol d’Or Mirabaud in 2010. Bertarelli was the first helmswoman to win this race since its inception in 1939.

Bertarelli was born in Rome in 1968. She is the daughter of Fabio Bertarelli. She and her brother Ernesto inherited Serono, one of the largest biotechnology companies in the world. Serono was founded in 1906 in Rome and was the building block of the family’s wealth.  The family now has a diverse portfolio of activities and investments, with interests in areas such as finance, real estate, health, sports, hospitality or agriculture. According to the magazine Forbes, in 2011 the family ranked as the 81st worldwide in terms of wealth. The Bertarellis moved to Switzerland in 1973. Bertarelli has a BSc from Boston University’s College of Communications.

After her father died, Bertarelli and her brother, founded in 1999 the Bertarelli Foundation to promote the sharing and development of scientific, social and economic knowledge in the field of infertility. For ten years, Bertarelli was Chairman of the Foundation, whose medical education and work programme reduced by over 50% multiple pregnancies due to in-vitro fertilization. In 2007, these activities were taken over by the Lausanne-based Fondation FABER in Switzerland. The Bertarelli Foundation has reoriented its activities to focus on several areas, namely the life sciences, education, the protection of the world’s oceans and sports.

p1404366256-2

Yann Guichard signed an excellent 2012 sports season, for example winning the Krys Ocean Race and the Multi One Championship at the helm of his trimaran, Spindrift.

From 2013 onwards, the couple has defined a joint challenge with this project of creating new records and pushing beyond old ones. The two skippers have thus reorganised their teams in order to manage the racing season under a single entity. The ocean-faring 131-foot giant, relaunched as Spindrift 2, will thus join 70-foot Spindrift and 35-foot Ladycat under Spindrift racing’s banner. Spindrift racing was founded in September 2011.

The Maxi Spindrift 2 trimaran will now be put in dry dock to quit her famous blue and white colours and be decked out in her new ones. The craft will be back in the water in the spring, first for training, then to be on the departure line of the Rolex Fastnet Race 2013 race on August 11th.

TEAM ORACLE - The Bay Area sports buzz will continue next week when ORACLE TEAM USA relaunches the AC72. Following months of repair work and delivery and assembly of the second wing, the boat is nearing completion and is on track to be sailing in the San Francisco Bay early next week.

“After the capsize, the team set the first week of February as the target date to get back on the water,” said General Manager Grant Simmer. “A lot had to come together for that to happen, and it’s a great achievement to be right on schedule. Everyone really worked hard and put in long hours to meet that goal.”

Last week with modifications wrapping up and painting finished, the assembly began. Nets have been tied back onto the platform, and system installation started – hydraulics, electronics, steering.

“Now the majority of the modifications are complete and we’ve moved on to the assembly process,” said Shore Team Manager Mark Turner. “We’ll be load testing at the end of the week and getting the boards back in.

“Everyone has been focused and really pushing to get all of the work done,” Turner said. “It’s meant a lot of long hours for a lot of people, seven days a week. They’ve been working not only on repairs, but also doing the work needed to modify the platform.”

The entire team is looking forward to watching the results of their labor roll back out of the shed, returning to the water for the first time since the October 16 capsize.

“With this group of sailors, there’s not one person who’s going to be holding back,” said tactician Tom Slingsby. “We’re going to get straight back into it.”

WINNERS AND GRINNERS AT KEY WEST

FARR 400 - Brisk tradewinds that stayed true to the same NE’ly direction throughout the five days of racing at 2013 Quantum Key West Race Week, proved the perfect showcase for the Farr 400 One Design class whose boat owners enjoyed the double bonus of racing within the nine-boat HPR class.

Although it was George Collins and his highly experienced crew on Chessie Racing, which emerged with the top award for the Farr 400 class, in fact line honours were shared across the class of five boats from both sides of the Atlantic. Indeed it would be fair to say that in terms of performance and results, each of the Farr 400’s had their own time in the sun.

Racing was always close and in the 15-20kts breezes the Farr 400 put the crews through their paces delivering fast, exciting downwind sailing and excellent tactical upwind sailing. In the gusty, puffy and shifting winds a high premium was not only placed on fast sailing on the runs, but there were often big gains to be made in the gusts and shifts, which peppered the race track which was shared with the Mini Maxi, 52 Super Series, Farr 40 and Swan 42 classes.

Collins’ team proved consistent across the wind range. His crew includes three past members of the Stars & Stripes America’s Cup programmes, Ian Gordon of Farr Yacht Sails being one of the lynchpins on board Chessie Racing at Key West.

“Our crew work has been phenomenal. We’ve had very few mistakes,” commented Collins. “I’m having a ball doing the starts and driving. The boats have a nice groove to them and are very quick. A little wet, but very fun to sail.”

And while Chessie Racing emerged triumphant they were challenged throughout the week, especially by the Scandinavian team of Claus Landmark on Santa, which was led by Danish double Olympic gold medalist, Jesper Bank and Star/49er Olympian, Michael Hestbak.

Despite their professional set up not allowing them to part of the overall Farr 400 class results, Landmark’s team loved the racing and was a great benchmark for all, not least for Collins’ crew who took some satisfaction at overcoming the strong Scandinavian Vikings with a final match race.

One of the early pacemakers in the regatta, who found their form as the breeze increased was Hannes Waimer, who runs Premier Composite Technologies,
and his crew on Team Premier. Though his company co-founded the Farr
400 and build the boat, Waimer’s schedule means that he had done very little sailing on the boat.  However, despite this Waimer and his team, which included former Volvo/Whitbread sailor Gordon Maguire doing tactics, put in some strong early performances.

But it was one of the very many lobster pots dotted around the Florida Keys that put a premature end to their regatta.  During a fast downwind leg in Race 5 they were pulled to a very sudden halt, from 18 knots to zero in seconds, by a pot line.  They discovered very quickly that their rudder had been severed by the line sadly meaning they could not return to the race course again.

“Personally for us although the outcome for Team Premier wasn’t so positive as a result of our crab pot collision at 18 knots, it was a very positive outing for the Farr 400, showcasing the boat and the class in an important grand prix arena, in great conditions.” Recalled Waimer of Team Premier.

“ The racing was very close racing and in the end it was a well known amateur helmsman who won against the professional helmsman of Santa under HPR.”  Continues Waimer, “ And for both Chessie Racing and our own Team Premier this was actually the first time we raced the boats. We were both immediately competitive after two days of practicing.  This alone speaks volumes for how easy it is to set up the boat and get it going.”

“The new HPR rule works well for boats like the Farr 400.” Comments Waimer, “It just needs some tweaking on ratings for the different HPR boats – especially the ones that were not designed or built specifically for the rule.  We are expecting a more competitive rating in Miami in March when the Farr 400 will next race a major regatta under HPR.”

THE BOSS AND CREW ARE HAPPY!

VENDEE GLOBE UPDATE – Alex Thomson, Hugo Boss, third place in the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe - Alex Thomson crossed the Vendée Globe finish line at 07 hours 25 minutes 43 seconds (GMT) after 80 days 19 hours 23 minutes 43 seconds at sea. He finishes 2 days 18 hours and 7 minutes behind François Gabart.

His final race time is 80 days 19 hours 25 minutes 43 seconds. His average speed around the course was 12.6 knots and he actually covered 28, 022 miles at the average speed of 14.4 knots. Note: the race’s theoretical distance was 24,393.41 miles.

After Ellen MacArthur’s second place in 2000 and Mike Golding’s third in 2005, Alex Thomson becomes the third British skipper ever to finish on the podium of the Vendee Globe. But his time surpasses that of the Golding’s previous British solo race record from 2005 by 7 days 19 hours 52 minutes. After winner Francois Gabart and second placed Armel Le Cleac’h, Thomson has also smashed the previous race record of 84 days 03 hours 09 minutes set by Michel Desjoyeaux in 2009.

What does Alex have to say after finishing?

“I’ve sailed out of the channel three times but only once back in. And let me tell you, the way back is absolutely great!!!

A lot of this race is about preparation. It took me three months to complete this race but it took my team three years to make it possible so I want to thank them all very much.

Leaving a little boy behind is very difficult, my son Oscar has grown every day while I was away and his speech has improved. My wife has kept me in touch with Oscar throughout the race. I feel a little guilty because I had fun at sea while she stayed home.

To not have any power on board is hard. We had taken enough fuel for half of the race and we were relying on hydrogenerators for the rest. The first couple of days after the incident were so hard, but I had no choice. I’m glad I did what I did.

I remember Denis Horeau asking me if a race time of 77 days was realistic. I told him it was ridiculous, but he was right. Our IMOCA 60 boats are fantastic. I would have loved to do it three days faster, but hopefully next time I will.

My wife will not want to hear about the 2016 edition of the Vendée Globe, at least not right now. It was my third Vendée Globe, this race has been part of my life for 10 years now, it’s in my blood. Right now, I can’t imagine not doing the 2016 Vendée Globe.

The most important thing for me in this Vendée Globe was to finish the race. Standing on the podium is amazing, though and really, the race time is irrelevant.
People have said it was noble to stay close to JP when he had problems, but to me, it was just the normal thing to do, it shows the respect we all have for each other. I’ve been rescued by Mike Golding, I know what it feels like.”

ALEX

YOUTH SAILING  - Five America’s Cup World Series Teams support own youth teams

The line-up for the Selection Series for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup will include 11 national teams, attending the two qualifying sessions in San Francisco from February 9-24.

A British team, the GBR Youth Challenge, has been added to the roster to take the place of the previously invited French Youth Team, who now qualify directly for September’s event after gaining support from the French America’s Cup World Series entry, Energy Team.

“The America’s Cup is the greatest thing you can do in sailing,” said Adam Lees, of the British team. “The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is about getting more people involved in the competition and making it more accessible to young sailors so the next generation is involved early on.”

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, scheduled September 1-4, 2013, begins with the Selection Series in San Francisco in February. With the goal of ensuring the best of the best are on the starting line of the main event, the Selection Series will narrow the field through two rigorous training workshop and regatta sessions from February 9-15 and February 18-24, 2013.

“The goal of the selection process is two-fold,” said Hans-Peter Steinacher, a double Olympic gold medalist who shares the role of Sports Director for the event with Roman Hagara.

“First, we want all of the teams at the selection series to learn and improve and maximize their potential. At the same time, we must evaluate the crews over the course of the week so that we can invite the top teams to race for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in September. This is such a great chance for these young teams to launch their careers.”

“We will have this one chance to see the youth teams train and compete under high-pressure situations during the selection camp,” agreed Hagara. “It’s a fantastic way to assess who can perform to their best and to select those who deserve to qualify for the main event.”

Emirates Team New Zealand, Artemis Racing, China Team and Energy Team have all indicated they are supporting teams for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Youth crews with the support of an America’s Cup World Series team are eligible for direct entry to September’s event via the Regatta Director.

ORACLE TEAM USA, the current holder of the America’s Cup, conducted its own training camp before Christmas to select which American teams it would support. USA45 Racing (representing the USA), and American Youth Sailing Force (representing San Francisco) will both spend the coming months training for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup under the stewardship of the American Cup defender.

The Selection Series in February will be held on the same AC45 wing sail catamarans the youth crews will race in September. These are also the same boats the America’s Cup teams race in the AC World Series.

DOUBLE HANDING – Sailing a SL33 double-handed in San Francisco in 30 knots of wind in the Three Bridge Fiasco race last weekend sounds like a lot of fun!  Here is short description of the video by Urs Rothacher, the skipper and owner: “If we look a little slow: Matt and I havent sailed together for a while and we were in energy conservation mode, which proved to be a good attitude; we finished in gusts of up to 30kn (7bft) with the main dropped… Sorry, camera ran out of juice just before the wind filled in.”
