DAY 2 OF AC72 MATCH RACING

Friday

AC NEWS – Emirates Team New Zealand photographer Chris Cameron spends a lot of his life bouncing around in a chase boat as he chronicles the progress of the team’s challenge for the 34th America’s Cup through his lens.

His pictures go far and wide – through the internet and  publication in newspapers and magazines.

For him no assignment has more interest than photographing the historic meetings of two AC72s on the water off Auckland.

He shoots hundreds of pictures on an average day, then starts the laborious process of downloading to his computer, image selection and distribution.

His latest pictures from the water which included a period of race training with Luna Rossa are here.

VENDEE GLOBE Breaking News!

Yesterday, between 12pm GMT Thursday 29th to 12pm GMT Friday 30th November François Gabart (MACIF), travelled from point to point, 482.91 miles in twenty-four hours, averaging speeds of 20.1 knots. This breaks the record held previously by Alex Thomson in 2003. Confirmation of the record is subject to the WSSRC validation.

Fleet News

The fleet is hurtling along at break neck speeds on the super highway of the Roaring Forties. François Gabart (MACIF) and Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac Paprec 3) have both almost made top speeds of twenty knots in twenty-four hours, according to 3pm GMT rankings. There is talk on the racetrack of more surprises yet to be revealed. The front group of eight rushes headlong towards the first crossing point at the Gate of Aiguilles on the frozen road of the Indian Ocean. The shorts and sunglasses have been packed away and the boat husbandry has been done to ensure the skippers are as ready as they can be to enter the icy south.

US SAILING – PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (November 28, 2012) – US Sailing, the national governing body of the sport, today announced the launch of the REACH Program, an initiative that utilizes sailing as a platform that enables middle school aged youth of all backgrounds to embrace education, establish a love of learning and explore productive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) based careers.

The REACH program connects educators, sailing instructors, engineers, scientists with today’s youth to provide them with a one of a kind authentic learning experience, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a cooperative work environment. The REACH program through the leadership of US Sailing provides resources, connections and national partnerships to support organizations, and individuals that utilize sailing as an educational tool connecting youth nationwide to the sport of sailing.

US Sailing Executive Director Jack Gierhart said, “Sailing is a great platform for building self confidence and leadership and it’s a natural partnership with science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Community Sailing Centers are the perfect place to launch this type of programming. We’ve seen how successful they’ve been in working with people from all different backgrounds. That success, combined with the STEM specific focus of the REACH program, opens the door for a whole new educational opportunity.”

“Students will apply classroom learning in the field, collect real time data on wind, current, and water quality. They will analyze the data and become innovators by designing new solutions to the current problems in boat design environmental issues, wind energy, and underwater exploration,” said Jessica Servis, REACH Program Manager at US Sailing.

Phase one of the REACH program includes 10 lesson plans that range from wind and simple machines to robotics and marine science. The modules tightly align with Common Core Standards and the K-12 Framework for Science Education for middle school students. Five programs across the nation administered the program during the fall of 2012, including Community Boating Center (RI), Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center (VT), Life Sail (CA), Edison Sailing Center (FL) and New England Science and Sailing (CT).

Phase two will be project based, including a national competition engaging middle school students in the engineering by design process.

For more information on the REACH program, visit us at http://reach.ussailing.org/.

For specific questions regarding this program and how to get involved, please contact Jessica Servis at [email protected].

CAMMAS TALKS ABOUT CAPSIZING AND PUSHING THE LIMIT

AC NEWS - Franck Cammas, the French offshore sailor, is with Luna Rossa Challenge in Auckland until the end of the year, helping the team get to grips with the giant AC72 catamaran.

“My role is training the crew and helping them to start on the big boat (AC72). I have a bit more experience in big multihulls,” he tells AC UNCUT reporter Genny Tulloch.

He certainly has the resume for the job as the skipper of Volvo Ocean Race winning Groupama team. Cammas also holds numerous records in multihulls, including the Trophée Jules Verne in 2010 (round the world record in 48 days, 7 hours, 44 minutes and 52 seconds) and has had great success in the Transat Jacques Vabre, the crossing of the Atlantic ocean from Le Havre, France to San Salvador de Bahia, Brasil, which he won in 2001, 2003 and 2007. In 2010 he won the Route du Rhum (single handed transatlantic) on board the 31.5-meter trimaran Groupama 3.

Cammas knows how to push and find the limit. He has capsized giant offshore multihulls several times, but says it’s not a point of pride: “It’s never OK when you capsize. It’s a big accident. It’s a big risk. But when you sail multihulls, you have to think about capsizing… Everybody (will need) to push to the maximum if they want to win the Cup.”

He says the new America’s Cup in multihulls is ‘very interesting’ as a future challenge.

“For me it’s very exciting to do the America’s Cup,” he says. “For the sailors, it’s very exciting to sail on these boats and do the America’s Cup because it’s the highest level you can imagine in this world… So why not?”

‘LEAGUES’ COMBINE FOR A GREAT DAY AT THE 18′s

18ft SKIFFS – From the time James J. Giltinan introduced the football code of Rugby League to Australia in 1908, the summer sport of many Rugby League players was to sail in 18 Footers on Sydney Harbour.

The association between the two sports was such that in 1935 when Australia’s 18 Footer sailors formed their own club they named it the NSW 18 Footers League and held their meetings in the Rugby League’s headquarters in the city.

The sailing club’s first secretary was also the same James J. Giltinan.

Mr. Giltinan’s drive was such that the major trophies in both sports carried his name – ‘Giltinan Shield’ in Rugby League and ‘Giltinan Trophy’ in 18ft Skiff Racing.

South Sydney (famously known as the ‘Rabbitohs’) was one of the original Rugby League clubs in Australia and won the first ever premiership for the Giltinan Shield in 1908.  The club has since won more competitions than any other club in the League’s history.

Since the sailing League’s origin in 1935, it has become the world’s leading 18ft Skiff Racing organization and boasts the honour of having some of the world’s greatest sailors and designers pass through its racing ranks.

In recent years, the professionalism and technology in both sports has been heavily dependant on corporate sponsorship to enable it to retain the high standards they have set over such a long period.

With the links already established between the two sporting organizations, it is not surprising that they also share two corporate sponsors, which allows each to retain its position of excellence in their respective sports.

De’Longhi Australia and Kenwood ‘Create More’ are major sponsors to both sports and have linked the two ‘Leagues’ even closer with their co-sponsored skiffs – De’Longhi-Rabbitohs and Rabbitohs-Kenwood – in the Australian 18 Footers League fleet.

Driving force behind the ‘co-sponsorship’ and sporting link is the De’Longhi’s General Manager – Sales and Marketing, Mr. Tom Mitchell.

Never one to stand back and wait for something to happen, Tom was determined to strengthen the link even further and organized a ‘family-style get together’ day for the Rabbitohs at the sailing club in Double Bay.

The champion NRL Rabbitohs team began the day with a two hour training session in the park adjacent to the sailing club and stunned onlookers and locals with the club’s level of intensity and degree of professionalism.

Following a morning tea in the sailing clubhouse with their families, several players and coach Michael Maguire went for a sail on Sydney Harbour in the two Rabbitohs skiffs.

The day was an outstanding success and showed how sporting organizations can work together with their corporate sponsors to provide mutual benefits and to show how much their support is really appreciated.

Tom Mitchell’s passion, drive and vision is beginning to make him look a little like a modern day James J. Giltinan.

Summing up, Tom commented:

“To introduce the De’Longhi and Kenwood brands into sponsorship several years ago was one thing but to be associated around good people doing great things through sport has been the key driver to continue what is a unique relationship.

As a company over the last several years, we have grown through  passion.  Our new theme is passion with discipline.

The South Sydney Football Club and 18 foot skiff clubs have this in spades, so we are mutually benefiting whilst learning to be better every day.”

VENDEE GLOBE – For the first time on this 2012-2013 Vendée Globe, a competitor celebrates his birthday at sea. When Vincent Riou (January 9) won’t have this chance because of his retirement last week-end and waiting for Alessandro Di Bendetto birthday (January 5), Bernard Stamm celebrates his 49 anniversary off South America, between Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Buenos Aires (Argentina).

Before he’ll open his presents, the Swiss skipper, currently in third position, just hope one thing: some wind! “I believe my wife Catherine and my team prepared something. I hope I will have some surprises. I’ll tell you more about it when I’ll open my presents. But if I could ask for one present, it would be a 15-20 knots wind.”

SAILROCKET UPDATE – 24th of November,2012. This is the day that VESTAS Sailrocket 2 took speed sailing into a whole new era. Having already broken the existing Outright world speed sailing record by the biggest margin in the records history a little over a week earlier, the team took to the waters of Walvis Bay in strong winds to try and be the first to take the sport over the 60 knot average mark.

This video shows the third run of the day. The record attempt had been plagued by unusually light winds but they knew that on this day, Walvis Bay was going to deliver the goods. After 11 years of hard work on a ‘roller coaster of highs and lows’… everything was in place for something big to happen. Founder and co-designer of the Sailrocket project, Malcolm Barnsley, had flown in to see his dream play out before his own eyes. VESTAS Sailrocket 2 has put a mark way up on the graph to show everyone what is possible.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

VENDEE GLOBE REPORT - Happily bringing up the rear is the adventuring sea gardener, who is growing salad onboard, Alessandro Di Benedetto (Team Plastique) to 1243 miles from the front, with an 11 knot average in the last 24 hours. Yesterday, he sent back a video showing us he was not alone and was getting help steering the boat. Get past the annoying advertisements in the video to check out Alessandro’s co-pilot above.

Fleet News – The front of the fleet are gnawing their nails as they are plagued by fickle weather conditions. The question is who will benefit? Will it be those who have elected to sail the shortest and most direct route of the course, and are now heading into the lighter north, or those who have sailed deeper south in search of faster winds. The choices have been made but will the models depict a true and accurate forecast of the life on the ocean they are sailing. Only time will tell. Behind, still in the trade winds, the chasing pack are enjoying frisky conditions.

The frontman, Armel Le Cléac’h (Banque Populaire) is sticking to the direct route, and sailing the shortest course. The models are predicting lighter airs for the northern option. So the question is will they lose out in the coming days? Will those who have decided to sail slightly off piste and away from the direct route gain from the predicted winds building off the coast of Brazil?
In his wake, Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) has overnight held onto to his second place, sailing in the slip stream of Banque Populaire, he has chosen to sail the shortest course. Third place, Bernard Stamm (Cheminées Poujoulat) is making his way south, and losing a few miles on the leader. He confessed yesterday during Vendée Globe LIVE that he is envious of those positioned more west. There is a high pressure developing in the north-north-west, which could allow those more south to accelerate forward. The gambling three (Gabart, Dick and Le Camm) might be rubbing their hands with glee if this tactical choice plays in their favour.

The slowest boat in the fleet, overnight François Gabart (MACIF) is now sailing on the same latitude as Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac Paprec 3). Gabart wrote last night as he sailed under the light of moonlit sky, “This moon is full. Almost. Maybe tomorrow? It’s always more fun to steer on the bridge at night at this time. In 10 days, when we are in “the south”, it will be cloudy 90% of the time. So full moon, or not, it does not change much. There is not much wind, but it could be much worse. We try to advance as you can. I think the worst is behind but we won’t accelerate for a few days! :-)”

Another skipper this morning rubbing his hands like Charles Dicken’s character, Uriah Heep, is Jean Le Cam (SynerCiel). He is on the expressway south hoping to benefit from a shift westward. He is neck and neck with Mike Golding (Gamesa) a little further west and slower. But the fastest of the group of the hunting senior sailors, Dominique Wavre (Mirabaud) has shifted further west of the pack searching for good winds to dive south. He has travelled almost 300 miles in the last 24 hours.

Super slippery slip slides in the tradewinds

Javier Sanso (Acciona 100% EcoPowered) with his batteries recharged 100% has made great progress covering 369.8 miles in 24 hours, with an average of over 17 knots in the last hour. He has taken advantage of the rotation of the trade winds and is curving his way eastward. He wrote this morning, “Today has been the fastest day in the southern hemisphere with 15-17 knots of a 70º wind. It looks like we are getting a little closer to the leaders but we will have to see what happens in the next few days. The power systems are working well. I’m still fully charging the batteries every day and close to latitude 30º. It is spring here, the sun is higher and the sails have less shadow over the panels. A big hug. NO PETROL WELCOME ON BOARD. Bubi”

Offset in the east, Tanguy de Lamotte (Initiatives Cœur) in 10th place is still managing to maintain a good pace at the helm of his 1998 Lombard. “It was an eventful night onboard, with squalls and waves – the opposite of yesterday! But my gift from the day which was perfect for the night was when I saw my position so now I am going to study the files.” Lamotte is aware the green dragon, Arnaud Bossières (Akena Verandas) is breathing fire down his neck and is looking to overtake.

Last night, Arnaud Bossières (Akena Verandas) was the fastest of the fleet. After a diabolical Doldrums he is ready to unleash his fury and show the full potential of his boat, the former PRB. Bertrand De Broc (Votre Nom Autour du Monde with EDM) is connecting the back of the fleet with the chasing pack and has covered over 370 miles in 24 hours. But yesterday during the web tv show Vendée Globe live he confessed that he can’t wait to get into the icy grip of the Southern Ocean.

Watch web tv Vendée Globe LIVE every day at midday GMT to watch the latest news LIVE from the race track.

DECISIONS AS THE DICE ROLLS

VENDEE GLOBE - As the skippers sail through the night will the morning rankings pay out dividends for those western gamblers.

As we shut down for the night the skippers will continue to battle through the oceans in the fickle conditions of the corridor of pain. In the morning another chapter will open and more will be revealed.

Has Le Cam’s westerley gamble paid off? At the 2000 ranking he was 6 miles ahead. The front runners are compressed enough so that everything is still to play for. The beau Breton on Banque Populaire is right with his thinking that this is not the time to rest on your laurels; the battle has just begun in this nailbiting edition of the Vendée Globe.
